I thought he did pretty decent in his first game, and did dish out a few good hits. I was hoping he'd fight somebody, but he only fights gladiators I guess (like Laraque, Boogard, Fedoruk, Shelley, Ivanans, etc.). Well I was wondering if anybody has a picture of him, so I can make it my avatar.

He does remind me of the good old-time hockey enforcers...Andre "the Moose" DuPont, Dave Semenko, Chris Nilan, Tim Hunter, Brad Park, Bob Probert, Tony Twist, Clark Gillies, Dave "Tiger" Williams.

Well, at least he's preserving a hockey tradition that Butthead (Bettman) doesn't value...if Bettman does banish fighting altogether, I wonder what every one of us will do...

2012-2013 Season: What Do We Have & What Do We Need?

With the 2011-2012 NHL season drawing to a close for the Ducks and their fans it's time to start looking towards next season. Here's a look at some of the issues the Ducks have to address this summer:

1. Who's Left?

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) on July 1st:
Teemu Selanne
Saku Koivu
Jason Blake
Niklas Hagman
Rod Pelley
George Parros
Sheldon Brookbank
Dan Ellis
J.F. Jacques
Matt Smaby
Mark Bell
Troy Bodie

Restricted Free Agents (RFA):
Nick Bonino
(Minor Leaguers: Rick Schofield, Dale Mitchell, Ryan O'Marra, Mathieu Carle, Kyle Cumiskey, Riley Holzapfel, Patrick Maroon, Luca Caputi, Sean Zimmerman, Iiro Tarkki and Marco Cousineau)

The sooner we get some clarity on which of these players will be back the better because that's eight spots on the NHL roster to fill.

2. How Much Money Can We Spend?

This is a bit tricky because the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NHL and NHLPA expires on September 15th. That means that we're not sure what the salary cap situation will be next year. For now, though, assuming it doesn't go down (it never has and in fact has gone up every single year. The salary cap was $39 million in 2005-2006 and is now $64.3 million which means it's gone up 64% in just six years) it will leave the Ducks with approximately $23.7 million to spend under the Cap. The Ducks, though, never spend to the Cap and there's no reason to think they'll do so next season with ticket prices being reduced and the Pond undergoing a major renovation. Let's assume that they spend around $60 million like they did this season - that still leaves them with more than $19 million to spend this summer. (CapGeek.com is a great resource to keep track of who's signed, how much they make, whey their contract expires and how much room the teams have under the Cap.)

3. Who's Available?

While we will never know who is available via trade we do know who is available as a free agent. Again, CapGeek.com is a great resource for this (LINK) and NHL.com has already started previewing free agency as well (LINK).

4. What Prospects Are Ready To Play?

Nobody knows for sure but we can say that both Kyle Palmieri (RW) and Peter Holland (C ) will have played an entire season in the AHL with a little bit of NHL experience as well. They are both 21-year old former first round draft picks and should be as ready for the NHL as they'll ever be come October. In addition to them there's Emerson Etem (RW) who was a first round draft pick in 2010 and who is currently leading the WHL in goals with 53 in 58 games and appears to be ready to make the jump.

On defense it sounds as though both Sami Vatanen and Justin Schultz are ready to make a run at a roster spot in camp. Vatanen is already under contract but Schultz is not. Vatanen was a fourth round pick in 2009 and Schultz was a second round pick in 2008.

There are no goalie prospects that are close to being NHL ready.

5. How Do We Look Right Now?

Based on the players that are already under contract only here's what the Ducks have:

#1 - Ryan/Getzlaf/Perry
#2 - ???/???/???
#3 - Beleskey/Cogliano/Smith-Pelly
#4 - ???/Bonino/???

D1 - Beauchemin/Fowler
D2 - Sbisa/Visnovsky
D3 - Lydman/???

G - Hiller/???

There's obviously a lot of work to be done and plenty of time for us to discuss it. Some key dates to remember are:

June 22-23 = NHL Draft
July 1st = Free Agency Begins
September 15th = CBA Expires

2012 NHL Draft

Since the Ducks 2011-2012 season is all but over (meaning they won't be going to the playoffs and simply have to play out the remaining 49 games) it's time to start looking ahead to the draft where, unfortunately, the Ducks will be sitting very close to the front and could have the #1 overall selection.

Here are the Ducks draft picks for the 2012 draft:

1st Round
Anaheim

2nd Round
Anaheim

3rd Round
Vancouver (Acquired in the trade for Maxim Lapierre on 02/28/11)
(St. Louis owns Anaheim's pick as a result of the trade for Brad Winchester on 02/28/11)

4th Round
Anaheim
San Jose (Acquired in the trade for Travis Moen & Kent Huskins on 03/04/09)

5th Round
Anaheim

6th Round
(Toronto owns Anaheim's pick as a result of a trade on 06/25/11 for the Leafs 6th round pick in 2011 which the Ducks used to select Josh Manson)

7th Round
Anaheim
New Jersey (Acquired in the trade for Kurtis Foster on 12/12/11)

Here are the Top Ten prospects according to the International Scouting Services (updated in December of 2011)

1.
Corey Perry appreciation thread

The following is a portion of my latest post over at Hockeybuzz.com. For the full text you can click on the link in my signature. Basically I feel that Corey Perry is playing extraordinary hockey right now and should be applauded for his efforts. Without him who knows where the Ducks would be right now and I hope his strong play continues.

------------------------------

One of the biggest surprises for me this year has been the play of Corey Perry. Perry is a former first round draft pick (28th overall in 2003) and has always been a nice player for the Ducks with a lot of potential. This season he has taken huge steps in becoming a more consistent scorer and dominant power forward.

In 15 games this season Perry has eight goals and five assists putting him on pace for 43 goals and 27 assists (70 points) this season. Now, I don’t expect him to reach 40 goals this year but I do expect him to easily surpass the career-high 17 goals that he scored last season.

Perry’s offense has been huge for the Ducks this season as he has equaled number of goals that Ryan Getzlaf, Andy McDonald, Todd Bertuzzi and Samuel Pahlsson have combined to score in 45 games. The consistency has been nice to see as he has not gone longer than three games without scoring a goal and has not gone longer than two games without scoring a point.

Clearly there’s something about Perry that irks the other team as well as he is always getting into a shoving match after the whistle. He’s not afraid to drop the gloves and has done so seven times in his NHL career but for every time he does get into a fight there’s probably 10 times that he gets into a scrum after the whistle. Perry is 6’3” and 200 pounds so he’s a big enough man to cause some chaos on the ice when he forechecks and crashes the net. At just 22 years old he’s bound to fill out more as time goes on which should only help his game.

If Perry can continue to play at this level, or even continue to improve, the Ducks will be well set for the future with him, Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan as their forwards of the future. Regardless of what he does in the years to come Perry is providing the Ducks with some offense and consistency at a time when they desperately need it.

Do we have an owner still interested in the team beyond the balance sheet? Do we have an absentee owner?

Now that Ryan Getzlaf has been given the C, it's probably time for his own thread.

He's obviously the Ducks most talented and complete player (and a lot of people would qualify that statement with "when he wants to be"), and the one guy who is key to our success more than any other on the roster.

And as much as I hate to start off the thread with a negative, how long is he going to continue to be a numbskull?

Not only has he been running his mouth on the ice as usual, he hasn't backed any of his newly-given power up. Zero points in the first three games of the new season and his captaincy, and more importantly zero wins and zero standing-points.

If that's not enough, he starts a fight with an opponent in a game where his team is flat being out-played, out-hustled, out-classed... you name it... right at a time where his rearguard is in deep ca-ca because of the loss of a key member that INJURED HIMSELF DOING THE EXACT SAME THING!!!

Hello?

The Bob Murray Thread

With the Ducks steadily moving in the wrong direction ever since our Stanley Cup win two seasons ago, it is obvious that changes need to be made. A quieter and gentler man has taken over as our GM, and by nature has not publicly taken the bull by the horns like his predecessor did and proclaim the direction in which the franchise will be going.

Has Bob Murray given us any indication or outlined a plan that he is going to follow to get this club going in the right direction again?

My impression so far is that he is more of a caretaker than a leader. Maybe I've missed something, but I have not heard him outline any plan or vision for this franchise other than acknowledging the previous one, which is currently not working.

I am hoping for some insight here in this thread through opinions and quotes/anecdotes and track record/history and the like.

Does Bob Murray have a plan, and what is it? Where will he take this franchise?

Any ideas anyone?

The Cam Fowler Thread

Sooner or later Cam Fowler will be patrolling the Ducks' blueline. With all the expectation and even some hype, I decided to create a topic for him If the mods want to move it to the Duck Eggs, especially if he doesn't make the team, please do.

QUOTE

The 18-year-old began his first training camp paired with veterans Andy Sutton and Paul Mara.

“Those guys really welcomed me and took me under their wing,” Fowler said. “They treated me just like a normal player and were talking to me on the bench.

“The team is not happy with last year. They are going to do everything they can to get the right guys in here. I’m just trying to do the best I can to try to make the lineup.”

Said Carlyle, “Obviously, with the turnover and changes that we’ve made, defense is an area that we need some young kids to step to the forefront. If Cam Fowler can continue to do the things he does best, which is skating and moving the puck, he’ll make it difficult on us and that is what you look for a player to do.”
