We've done fine in the past without a bomb fromt he point, but you have to have other pieces. Biggest piece, IMO, net front presence.

We have the guys who can run the PP's, a big shot would be nice, but I think you can do without it if the other pieces work.

Yeah, maybe Howitzer is the wrong term.  They need to get pucks on net.  They too often seem hesitant to direct shots on goal, or unable to get shots from the point through.

Their recent PP QB's seem to just be really good at passing the puck around the perimeter.  That's the equivalent to having an actual QB who is really proficient at handing the ball off.

Eventually you have to go vertical/get pucks on net.

I actually think it has LESS to do with their personnel and MORE to do with their scheme.  They want to see if they can pass the puck into the net, as opposed to getting it on net and creating havoc.  When Eaves showed up it seemed like they changed a little bit because he went to the front.  He was less of a passing option and more of a screening option.  Then Eaves got hurt and they all wanted to pass for 2 minutes.

Wasn't that... like... half of the reason to have Vatanen on the roster a couple years ago? Everyone described his shot as "heavy" which I think is what you're referring to HH.

Where did that guy go?

With the shoulder injury "that" guy might not BE back.

Unless he suffered that injury a year ago I don't buy that excuse.

Id buy the excuse if he had been suffering from a shoulder issue all season and it was just progressively getting worse

I think it was pretty obvious that Vatanen was a different player this year.  His shoulder could have been wonky for a while.  Hard to know.  He was not offensively aggressive this season.  I think that has probably more to do with either coaching strategy or an injury than it has to do with Vatanen becoming less of a player from last season to this season.

Since we cannot protect all of our better defensemen from the draft, it looks to me like we have an opportunity to get out from underneath this diminishing returns contract.

Unless Murray finds love in expansion draft wheeling-dealing, I'd let Vatanen be the sacrifice lamb.

I'm Ok with Vatanen going to expansion. Obviously it's preferable to move him for a forward.

Move him East.

Maybe to NJ for Henrique or preferably Pavel Zacha?

Then we protect:

Getzlaf

Perry

Kesler

Rakell

Sifverberg

Cogliano

Zacha/Henrique

Lindholm

Fowler

Manson

Gibson

Leafs, TB, Sabers, NJ, Bruins.

Here's the thing, Anaheim needs to do multiple things to be ready for the draft. We still need a 2nd draft eligible Dman. Bieksa has to waive. We need to acquire another forward. We need to dump a contract or two.

There are multiple scenarios out there but the biggest thing is that Vatanen is trending in the wrong direction. If a deal can be made to keep Fowler long term, Vats has to go and instead of making him the sacrificial lamb, we should be using him as bait.

Even if the return is not equal, something for Vats is better than nothing. If we could get TOR to deal us JVR and a draft eligible D for Vats and Stoner, you do it. Yes, you want more for Vats than JVR, but if you can dump salary and acquire a toss away D man for the draft... you could do a lot worse.

And JVR is a pretty damn good left shooting forward. I could deal with that.

Interesting that it was mutual.  Maybe he feels he can get an HC job somewhere?  Perhaps he and RC didn't see eye to eye?

If we could somehow get Adam Oats in to run our powerplay, THAT WOULD BE SICK!!!!

Also, Trent Yawney & Rich Preston return as Assistant Coaches. Todd Marchant is back as Director of Player Development and Special Projects.

So maybe Preston is behind the bench? Maybe Todd gets a shot behind the bench?

Disco Dan is still out there...

How's that gonna blend with Classical Carlyle?

That would give us two a-holes behind the bench.

Yawney and Carlyle? Isn't Oates supposed to be a "motivator"?
