Ya, guess he doesn't want to win a cup. The leafs are a good team but not cup contenders with that defense. Looks like he wanted to get paid.

Leafs really tied their hands. They got a bunch of soon to be rfas that will be expensive , especially mathews. Maybe they'll be looking to finally trade jvr now. Vats for jvr.

No; they trade JVR to TOR for Barrie, and we trade Vats+ to COL for Duchene! :)

Just FYI everyone, Big Joe got $8 million for his one year back in San Jose. They didn't finalize the number until after Marleau had made his decision.

Yeah I was having that argument with a hockey account on twitter whose admin I can only assume is a Leafs fan. They were trying to say its nto a big deal because they can buy him out or trade him away in year 3, but due tot he fact that its a 35+ contract, you eat that entire cap hit regardless of how much you are actually paying the guy ina  buyout. And if you do trade him away you are going to have to give someone something significant to take onn $6.25mil in dead cap space.

The other thing that rub me the wrong way there is Toronto just started to turn things around and become relevant in the NHL again by building fromt he ground up. THis is the kind of move a team makes when they are at the end of their Cup window and need to win now. Just doesnt fit.

Stupid money just keeps getting tossed around. Ridiculous.

Ok so what if...

Trade Sami to TOR for JVR+

Trade Cogs (might have to add?) to BOS for Spooner's rights and pay him $2.25mil

Sign Fisher for 2 years at $3.5mil per

JVR/Getzlaf/Eaves

Rakell/Kesler/Silfver

Ritchie/FIsher/Perry

Spooner/Vermette/Kase

Fowler/Manson

Lindholm/Montour

Larsson/Bieksa

Gibson

Miller

You still have $2.4mil in cap space

More depth for the bottom 6.

A guy like that is for depth and the AHL. I think they would rather play Shaw and Kase but who knows. Will probably start off as a 4th line guy but this signing is filled with a whole bunch of meh

It's a 1-way deal. I suspect that it is for depth and to allow Kase to get more minutes with the Gulls, which wouldn't hurt him a bit.

I don't think this affects Kase.  This guy will be expected to fill a very different role than Kase if he does play consistently.  Just because it's a 1 way deal doesn't mean he is guaranteed a spot.  Just means he makes the same in the AHL as the NHL.

Understood, but I wouldn't be spending that money on someone I expected to stay in the AHL.

Good point. But we have a lot of money on the Gulls roster.

I know - too much. Which is why I think a 2-way guy may be headed down. We lost Thompson; Ras may be the new 4C. But I would have preferred Vermette there and get a real 2C/3C, or at least a top-6 forward. But the summer is still young!

To me, that article seems to indicate that the priorities this offseason were:

1.  Don't lose Vatanen or Manson to expansion

2.  Get Fowler extended

3.  Find room to re-sign Eaves

4.  Get a back-up goalie

I didn't see "get better, get a scoring forward" in any of that.

I didn't read the article the same way.  I read it as this is what the Ducks did, not what they set out to do.  There is still room in there for additional goals.  They did mention "help on the 3rd line" as a need.

its a good team. hopefully everyone stays healthy and someone steps up because the forward depth is weak behind this. you can still always flip vats at some point.

If our kids don't hit slumps and our vets don't regress, we should still be a pretty good team.

I can't believe I ever complained about how cold the Honda Center was during the playoffs.

Doan and Iginla are both out there looking for 1 year deals. Anyone think they would be good signings? Im not sure they can produce like we would need them to anymore.

Doan on the 4th might not be a bad experiment. He's a solid leader, I believe a locker room favorite, and can hit like Ronnie Lott.

However, we seem to be stock piling 3rd / 4th liners.

Yeah I just wonder if its even worth it. Hes not really an upgrade for our top 9. Would have to be a 4th liner. I dunno Im so underwhelmed by this roster right now that maybe he would be fine.

Top 9: Cogs, Eaves, Getz, Kesler, Perry, Rakell, Ritchie, Silfverberg................................ Vermette?

Kase, Kerdiles, Carrick, Grant, Rasmussen, Shaw, Wagner, Boll. Those guys need to fill out a 4th line.

Man we need to trade Vatanen.

Boy, things must be really boring if we're talking about Doan. Truth be told however, while I would rather we not consider Doan, I would consider Iginla closer to September. If he's not signed by then, he might come cheap to a contender like us, but it wouldn't break my heart if we missed him. We still have time to trade Vats for Kadri or Duchene!

We don't need anymore 4th liners. We already have like 8.
