Now that it's Official, I figure the Samueli owned Ducks AHL Affiliate in San Diego probably deserves it's own thread.

First Item of Business.. A Name.

http://mayorsmanor.c...iego-team-name/

We can also now report, the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate in San Diego is expected to be called The Gulls, exactly as most had hoped after first hearing of hockeys return to the southern part of the state...

...From what weve been told, the entire ordeal has been quite the undertaking; a complicated mess that might make for a good case study in a future law school textbook.

------EDITED------

Name (all but) Confirmed by San Diego Union Tribune

I'm calling it.

Ha... Sharks team likely to be called the Seals.  Don't sharks eat seals?

I thought the same thing.

The history is nice... but it's bad Synergy.

San Jose Rays makes much more sense.

The Oakland Seals were Northern California's original team, I think its an awesome choice and another nice homage to hockey history in California.
Although to be fair Sea Lions would be just as nice.

I know the history...

But sharks eat Seals.

And then you'd have Seals "Playing" in the Shark Tank.

Wonder if they will swim skate out of the giant shark mouth.  Better yet, they could leave the ice that way.

I know the history with the name Seals, but it doesn't stop it from being ironic and funny.

Coyotes need a team out here.  Call them the Roadrunners.

Several!

But Gulls @ Reign games could be a ton of fun too!

I had a lady at a Grizzlies @ Reign game yell at my 9 year old son because we were routing for the Grizzlies.  Great fun!

Of course I let her and her boyfreind know exactly how I felt about them.

The Ducks will hold a “HockeyFest” at Valley View Casino Center (3500 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110) from noon – 3 p.m. this Sunday, Feb. 22 to celebrate the return of professional hockey to San Diego. The Ducks announced last month the purchase and relocation of their American Hockey League (AHL) club from Norfolk, Va., to San Diego. The club will play home games at Valley View Casino Center beginning this fall (2015-16 regular season).

The free event will feature the official unveiling of the AHL club’s name and logo. Ducks Owners Henry and Susan Samueli and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer will be on hand for the event. Sunday’s festivities will include family-friendly activities such as street hockey, a hardest shot challenge, a Ducks jump castle (bounce house), face painting, balloon stations, a photo booth and much more. In addition, the Anaheim Ducks Power Players will be on hand along with members of the Ducks Street Team. There will also be local live music in the Stella Artois Lounge from 1 – 2 p.m.

Updated first post to reflect the UT article from 1/28, I'd held off until today, but at this point... It's pretty obvious.

I like the current WSHL logo. I wonder what it will be for the AHL team.
Obviously it will have to be connected to the Ducks colors and general mood.

Are there any leaks?

Not that I know of.

In fact I don't even know if the there's any confirmation the new team will share colors with the Ducks.

I still think it's funny that the Sharks will share a building with their affiliate.

Talk about season ticket holder fatigue.

The Gulls were already traditionally orange.  Throw some gold in there and some blue in stead of black and I think those jerseys would look pretty kool.

Can't last long...

Even if the guppies draw the fans that can't afford sharks tickets... You are still going to hit market saturation issues.

I suspect what you are going to see is an end to the high number of sell out sharks games.

Oh no... I think they WILL, I just don't think there is any confirmation yet. ;)

Logo looks good.  I like the Ducks font and the little Seagull between the L and S.

Owners Henry and Susan Samueli, who bought the Norfolk Admirals from Ken Young, were on hand as an estimated 8,500 attended the festivities at Valley View Casino Center. The Gulls nickname has been part of several minor league hockey teams in the city since the 1960s.

You were expecting a good turnout. What were your thoughts when you saw the amount of fans that came to the event?
Henry Samueli: We were elated. It took us literally an hour to get from the freeway off-ramp to the arena. We had big smiles on our faces because we knew all of these people were in line to get into the arena. It was very exciting for us. We’re very excited to bring it back because we know there’s a tradition here. We had been looking at moving a team here ever since we took over the Anaheim Ducks. It takes a lot of work to align the stars and get five teams to agree and get their leases to coincide at the same time. It took us 10 years of work to finally make this come to fruition. We’re so excited.

I think it's funny that the TV guys last night were saying San Diego was an hour from Anaheim.

Yes, it's much closer than Norfolk, but it's at least 2 hours by car when I've done it.

And that's with no traffic.

I've done the drive in an hour and a half.  I left at midnight though.  Hahaha.
