“In Game 1 we kept it real simple,” forward Michael Sgarbossa said on Thursday after practice at Valley View. “We didn’t do anything out of the ordinary: We played a heavy game, we played tough, we battled them, we got the pucks in the corners. And when we do that, they don’t like that…They want to just keep turning their feet over, keep using their speed, keep using their skill. They don’t want to be hit.”

...

In Game 1, it seemed, the Gulls disrupted that chemistry. They made the Stars uncomfortable, frustrated them, and limited their chances to the outside. In Game 2, they did not, and they also were called for eight penalties — a too-high number that makes it difficult to win, especially a playoff game on the road.

The Ducks’ organizational depth took a hit with goaltender Matt Hackett and forward Emerson Etem out indefinitely after shoulder and knee surgeries, respectively, the San Diego Gulls announced. The timetable for the Long Beach-product Etem is “month to month,” a Gulls official said.

The San Diego Gulls (10-5-1-0; 21 pts.) won again to extend their franchise-record winning streak to eight consecutive games as they defeated the Stockton Heat (10-5-1-1; 22 pts.) 3-2 in a shootout at Stockton Arena. The Gulls’ current eight-game win streak is the longest current such streak in the AHL, tied for the longest in the AHL this season (also Lehigh Valley) and the win streak now ranks as San Diego’s second-longest unbeaten streak in franchise history since an 11-game unbeaten run from Feb. 19-Mar. 16, 2016 (9-1-1).

Soon after the bears hit the ice, a crew consisting of youth players from Poway Ice Arena cleaned them up. Eakins also ordered his players to help clean the bears off the ice – seeing this as an opportunity to build character.

They put the bears onto giant green tarps and helped guide them through a tunnel next to the rink, where the stuffed animals went to an interior room in the building.

“We’re going to be involved and we’re going to go and shovel it and do some work and show that we care about it,” Eakins said. “I just think it sends a very positive message to our fans. I think it’s a very positive outlook on our organization. And I’ve said it a million times before. Are we here to develop hockey players? Yeah. But for me, my most important thing is I want to develop good men and that’s part of being a good man right there.”

The Gulls scored three first-period goals in the span of 2 minutes, 37 seconds, chased a third-string goalie before most fans had a chance to warm their seats, and cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Ontario Reign in Game 5 of a Pacific Division semifinal series.

The Gulls, who lost in the second round to Ontario last season, will face San Jose in a best-of-seven series starting Friday on the road.

...

One night after beating the Gulls 4-1 in Ontario, the Reign were forced to start their third goalie, Jack Flinn, because starter Jack Campbell was apparently injured during Monday’s game and his backup, Jeff Zatkoff, went down while warming up before Tuesday’s puck drop.
