"The beauty of a seven-game series is that it is just one game," said Ward after allowing three goals on 27 shots Saturday. "We're going to try to learn from it and come out firing in Game 2."

Consider the Sabres, who are not impressively physical anywhere on the ice, outside of Mike Grier's uniform, and yet are aggressive with their skating and tenacity for the puck. They fast-break like the Lakers of the 1980s, turning rebounds into rushes the other way with such quickness that opponents rarely can make a line change on the fly.
...
Then you have Carolina, which will counter that speed with, well, speed. The Hurricanes will employ Laviolette's trademark two-man forecheck and try to force the Sabres into turnovers and ill-advised long passes. The Hurricanes buried the Devils almost entirely with their power play, but they also can score on their aggressive penalty kill.

Brind'Amour showed just how dominant he can be, schooling John Madden throughout most of the second-round series against New Jersey. During the season, madden took more than 1,600 draws and won just above 50 percent. Yet, in the six-game series against Carolina, Madden won just 20 of the 63 faceoffs he took against Brind'Amour.

Teammates Martin Biron remembered the play.
"I couldn't believe it," said the Sabres' netminder. "I thought St. Louis had a clear shot on goal. Henrik just didn't let it happen."
"I don't know if I'm actually fast," said Tallinder recalling the play. "But I've always had some great speed. I think it comes from hard work, but I think it comes a bit naturally too."
