VANCOUVER (CP) -- The men's and women's hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics will be played on the smaller, NHL-sized ice surface, a move that will save organizers of the Vancouver Games $10 million in construction costs.

Talk about your home ice advantage!! I really like the Garage and I was wondering what changes they would have to make. Looks like nada, which is fine with me. I know a great little hotel walking distance from GM Place that will be my home for the Olympics!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I would love to go to Vancouver for the Olympics. Perhaps they will require the skills of a relatively-newly qualified Civil Engineer to help build some stuff. Helping in the construction of the Olympics would be fantastic. biggrin.gif dribble.gif Oh, and watching the hockey wouldn't be so bad, either. laugh.gif

Wayne Gretzky says the two best Canadian hockey coaches today are found in Alberta and should be the early favourites to lead Team Canada at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

According to a report in the The Globe and Mail, Gretzky said Edmonton Oilers bench boss Craig MacTavish and Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter should receive serious consideration for the job that is now 43 months away.

QUOTE
“There are lots of good Canadian coaches,” Gretzky said. “But when you look at what Craig and Darryl have accomplished with their teams the last few years, they absolutely should be the favourites. They coached their teams to the Stanley Cup finals and they coach in Canada, and right now they are the best Canadian coaches in the game.”

The NHL awards had an Olympic flavour Wednesday night, with one third of Team Canada's potential 2010 roster in attendance.
...
The 19-year-old Crosby definitely hoped to skate alongside the players around him Wednesday night come the Vancouver Games.

"That would be so nice," Crosby said enthusiastically. "I know watching the last Olympics, it was tough to see how it panned out. It's just natural for any Canadian player to be part of that and help their country. You see the guys here tonight, hopefully this group of guys can be together at another time. It would be huge honour to be there."

Don't sweat it Sid, you're on the team.

"I don't think he'll ever any problems making that team," said Pronger. "But some of us old guys might."

They talked about that for a long time, because GM Place wasn't built for international-sized ice (in fact, it was originally built with the old NBA Grizzlies in mind).

It's going to be awesome though. It's not often an Olympics comes to your hometown. smile.gif

Burke-Wilson would be perfect Olympic hockey ticket

Wilson's personality is another reason why he and Burke are the perfect fit. When they get together, it's like two high school buddies trading insults on the back of the bus. I've witnessed their banter on more than one occasion and it's quite entertaining. They most certainly will argue about who should be on the U.S. team because they argue about everything, but they trust each other's opinions enough that the arguments will be constructive instead of destructive.

Both Burke and Wilson are also the best equipped to deal with the media pressure of the Olympics. Neither man has ever met a microphone that he didn't adore. They both would argue that they are the king of the one-liners.

I love the fact that the Canadian Womens hockey team will win another gold in their own country. I'm not biased or anything, I really think the Canadian Women's team is one of the best in the world. Them and Sweden.

The men however. I'll be happy with a 4th place finish from them. They blew it in Torino.

And should Italy make it in, which I hope they will, I will be cheering for them because my dads best friends son Carter plays for them.

In an interview Monday, Gretzky told Sportsnet that when Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson puts together a management team, he won't be the one calling the shots.

"Bob is going to make the hard decisions . . . somehow I am going to be involved in a smaller way and smaller role," Gretzky told Sportsnet.
...
Names such as Detroit general manager Ken Holland and Red Wings vice-president Steve Yzerman are just two of the names often mentioned in connection with the Canadian team's top job.

Gretzky suggested current NHL head coaches, such as Randy Carlyle of the Anaheim Ducks and Mike Babcock of Detroit, would make ideal coaching candidates.

Oh wow, if Carlye got the job then it wouldn't it be Carlye vs. Burke if the US played Canada? That would be interesting!

I was rooting for Selanne and Finland last go-round but I have a feeling that the Canada team is going to be loaded with plenty of Ducks, so i'm going to be rooting for them big time I'm thinking. It's not like I want the US to do badly, but when it comes to hockey my loyalty to the city of Anaheim comes ahead of the country.

I can see Babcock being head coach, with Gretzky and Carlyle as the assistants.

I'm like you Duckbill, I cheer for Ducks players first and foremost. Likely I'll be cheering for Canada(Getzlaf, Pronger then potentially Perry, Nieds and Giguere), plus it is my home country. I'll be cheering for Teemu if he's still around then!

I think I'm gonna go to the Olympics for the hockey as well!

To compensate, Burke must recruit players who can do more than pass the puck and score goals, players who aren't afraid to get dirty in the corners.

"We need some hard hats," Burke said. "We're going to need a little bigger team than we've used in the past, maybe have some guys with a little different jobs than you would have if you were putting together a team on the big sheet."

Burke maintains the traditional ice hockey powers - Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden - aren't invincible.

"The talent pool available is going to be deeper than it has ever been," he said. "We think we've got depth at all the skating positions. We think we've got quality goaltending. And we've got quality coaching candidates. ... We are good enough to compete."
