SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls announced Thursday that they will formally cease operations as of Friday (June 30).  Ongoing negotiations to sell the club did not materialize in a timeframe sufficient to operate for the 2006-07 season.

Hopefully Ron Hahn will be able to sell the team in time for the 07-08 season. I've gone to many a hockey game in San Diego and have many fond memories as well as friends there. It would be such a shame if the Gulls ceased to exist permanently or moved elsewhere.

Gulls minority owner Bob Strumm confirmed the situation. Around the league, other teams already were assessing Gulls players for possible bids.

“The recruiting wars begin,” Stockton Thunder President Dan Chapman said.
