Doug Armstrong knows he has work to do.

In fact, the Stars' general manager could be busy for the next eight months.

"This is a year where the team we have in October could look different in March," he said.

The team Armstrong has put together in July has some question marks but also has potential.

While Dallas has lost three significant parts in Jason Arnott, Bill Guerin and Willie Mitchell, it has added grit and still has salary cap room to address deficiencies on the second line.

Tippett: "I like to think that the guys who are going to push our team forward are some of the new players we have. I think Halpern will be a very important player for us. Modry and Sydor will be strong components for us. I think we have to look for our younger players like Jokinen, Miettinen, Ott and Daley to improve and become very good NHL players. I hope through all those things, our team will continue to improve."

Morrow named Stars' captain

Brenden Morrow was named the newest captain of the Stars on Friday, taking over the role held by Mike Modano since 2003.

The 27-year-old has spent his entire career in Dallas after being taken by them in the first round of the 1997 draft.

The Stars have been able to manufacture those wins and make their recent move in the standings despite uncharacteristically shaky goaltending from Marty Turco. In his last two outings, the slumping Turco has a bloated 7.93 goals-against average and lowly .773 save percentage.

“I certainly don’t think that I can’t play or that my career is over,” Turco told the Dallas Morning News. “But when you’re fighting it, and your coach has got his finger on the button, you’re going to play a little tentative or overaggressive.”

Amid ongoing speculation of a coaching change, Dallas Stars general manager Doug Armstrong emerged from a meeting with team owner Tom Hicks on Friday and immediately informed the Stars coaching staff that Dave Tippett will not be relieved of his duties.

Assistant coaches Mark Lamb and Rick Wilson will also be kept on in an effort to build on what Dallas management believes was a strong season.
