I wouldn't say we own them again, but I still say we beat them the majority of the games. Phoenix has improved themselves alot this year.

Then again, Roenick is back with them. We'll see how much of an "improvement" that is. wink.gif

On Wednesday, the Coyotes added one of the game’s premier power forwards with the signing of free agent Owen Nolan. The addition of Nolan gives Phoenix an added threat in the offensive zone and an intimidating presence for the opposition.

Nolan spent the entire 2005-06 season rehabbing a knee injury he sustained while playing for Toronto. For a competitor like Nolan, having to watch a season of hockey from home was more than disappointing; it was painful.

“It was absolutely torture,” said Nolan. “To know you are still capable of playing in the League and having to go through a couple surgeries and rehab, get close and think maybe you can contribute at the end of last season and then have to wait for this season to start before...it was frustrating. It was a lot of emotion, but I think the worst is behind now and I’ve got a fresh start.”

As a member of the San Jose Sharks from 1996-2000, Nolan established himself as a constant scoring threat, averaging 27 goals and 58 points a season. He also became known as one of the toughest competitors to play against due to his punishing style of play and desire to win.

While Nolan’s character and style of play seem to be a perfect fit for the Coyotes, numerous clubs around the league also sought after his services. But in the end, it was Phoenix’s commitment to winning and Nolan’s close relationship with General Manager Michael Barnett, which made the difference.

“First of all, I think they (the Coyotes) have a great team,” said Nolan. “Depth wise they look very good and obviously I have some history with Mike (Barnett). I trust him a lot, being my old agent and now the general manager, just talking with him, I was really impressed and saw no reason not to go there.”

In 2002, Nolan was selected by Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky to represent his country as a member of Team Canada at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Now facing an opportunity to be coached by Gretzky, Nolan admitted that it did play a part in is decision to come to Phoenix.

“You got the greatest player in the world as your coach,” said Nolan. “I look forward to being a part of that, getting to know him a little better and obviously being on his bench.”

After missing all of last season, Nolan was eager to return to the NHL, but he also wanted to prove his worth and felt that by signing a one-year deal with the Coyotes, he was doing just that.

“That’s all I wanted to do,” said Nolan. “I appreciate the Coyotes believing in me and taking me in on their team, but at the same time, I want to show them that they won’t regret it and hopefully things can expand from there in the future.”

Nolan’s appetite for winning certainly hasn’t diminished and for him the question is not ‘if the Coyotes will make the playoffs,” but rather how far they will go.

“With the talent we have there and the character guys, making the playoffs should be the least of our worries,” said Nolan. “We should be striving for more than just that.”

The start of training camp less is than a month away, and Nolan is turning his attention to the coming season. He is healthy again and ready to help the Coyotes capture their first Pacific Division title in franchise history.

“I’ve had plenty of time to rest,” said Nolan. “My knee feels great, I’ve been training like a mad-man and I’m excited and hungry to get back on the ice. I’m looking forward to day-one when I can get out on the ice and show everyone what I’ve got.

“I am going to come on the ice and play the way I play,” said Nolan. “I’m not going to ease my way into it, I’m going to play physical and I’m going to score.”

Roenick perplexed by lack of TV exposure
QUOTE
"Just having Gretzky as our owner, that's enough to get at least one of our games on (NBC)," Roenick tells the Arizona Republic. "I mean come on, throw a dog a bone. That, to me, is incredibly either disrespectful to Wayne or disrespectful to the city of Phoenix, a city that has supported their team."

The second annual event, which runs from noon to 5 p.m., is a celebration of everything "Coyotes."

Fans will have an opportunity to meet players and get autographs, chat with coaches and take part in a Hockey 101 session with broadcast personalities.

I agree with the Great One that the Phoenix Coyotes are a much-improved team. The Ducks won't be able to
easily have their way with them. In order for Anaheim to prevail, they'll have to really earn their wins
this upcoming season.

Regarding Jeremy Roenick speaking out on the lack of TV exposure in the United States,
his complaint is so true. The Ducks do get some games on OLN (about to be Versus) and even NBC,
but Phoenix gets one measly game all season on national television (in Minnesota on March 20th).
They are a better team in my opinion and deserve more dates even on the OLN schedule. But like everyone else,
they have to prove they're worthy of national TV time. That one game against Chicago was brutal
(being it was played during the same week the gambling ring surrounding Rick Tocchet became public).

The NHL still has yet to fulfill their promise to get the NHL more marketed and promoted since emerging
from the lockout.

I love that picture! Nothing says comeback like getting a nice punch to the face. Hehe. Really is that the only PHX picture they had to use? It's kinda sad.

The only way PHX will do well this season is if JR has his skates sharped correctly. Because as last year proves, if his skates are not sharp enough, he can't score goals. (That was such a sorry excuse)

Hockey Hearsay

QUOTE
Coyotes shopping for goalies

In the new NHL, teams can't afford to struggle for 20 games and still hope to make the NHL. With that in mind, look for teams such as Phoenix to make a trade sooner rather than later.

According to the Ottawa Sun, it's believed the Phoenix Coyotes are in the market for a new goalie.

Buffalo's Martin Biron, Anaheim's J.S. Giguere and San Jose's Vesa Toskala are three backstops which may be available, as well as Toronto's Mikael Tellqvist.

After four games, Phoenix has the worst goals against, with 19 goals.

The following is what I posted at HFBoards, so I figured I'd share it with you guys here as well.

I just don't believe the Phoenix Coyotes are following through with this new arena name.
It sounds so cheap! Why couldn't they name it Taco Bell Arena or something else southwestern?

While the arena's internet address has not changed yet, the moniker on its home page has.

Today, the Phoenix Coyotes announced that nearly three years since their new arena
15 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix opened on December 27, 2003, it FINALLY has a new name.
It will as we've anticipated now be called Jobing.com Arena.

Jobing.com acquires naming rights to Glendale Arena

Jobing.com blog entry (October 25):
Jobing Arena

KPHO-TV (Phoenix) (October 25):
(See video clip on this news story!)
Coyotes announce new name for Glendale Arena
Glendale Arena is now Jobing.com Arena (video clip)

Arizona Republic's Coyotes page (October 25):

GREAT ONE FILLS IN

QUOTE
LOS ANGELES -- Wayne Gretzky skated with his Phoenix Coyotes on Friday when they were short a forward for practice drills.

"That's the first time I've actually been in a practice for six years," Gretzky said. "It was fun to be out there."

Gretzky, 45, retired after the 1998-99 season. "It's a good thing I retired when I did," he said. "I've kind of lost a step."

'Yotes might be done with Roenick
QUOTE
The Coyotes might be finished with Jeremy Roenick.

Coach Wayne Gretzky said Roenick would not play in tonight's game, and possibly more, because Roenick left General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Tuesday after learning he'd been scratched from the lineup because of a back injury a few hours before Phoenix's 5-2 defeat.

.....

Gretzky plans to inform Roenick he will be benched this morning and discuss his future with the team.
