"The money is a second thing to me," Havlat said, moments before facing the hockey media in Chicago. "The most important thing is the way you play and what you show on the ice. It all comes together and the (contract) has been good to me, I'm really happy for that, but I have to give them back everything I can."
...
"That would be great," he said. "I've never missed the playoffs. I was fortunate to be in the playoffs every year in Ottawa. I'm very happy for that. We were one game from the Stanley Cup finals three years ago. The last three seasons I think we had the team to battle for the Cup, but we just couldn't do it. We had a great team."

Havlat's Hawks
QUOTE
Martin Havlat never got the chance to be a first-line player in his five seasons with the Ottawa Senators, a team so deep in talent even a skilled winger of his magnitude found himself on the second or third line.

Not anymore. The 25-year-old Czech native will be the go-to guy this season in Chicago, which stands to reason since the Blackhawks gave him top-line money.

"The challenge is going to be great. It's going to be something new," Havlat said this week from Montreal, his off-season home. "I'll have a different role than I had in Ottawa."

Daze on brink of retirement
QUOTE
Since the start of the 2003-04 season, Daze has played in only 20 games. Still, the Hawks apparently were willing to give him another chance before allowing him to become a free agent.

Blackhawks fire Yawney, name Savard coach

QUOTE
The Chicago Blackhawks are turning to one of the best players in franchise history to reverse their fortunes.

Denis Savard, one of five players to have his number retired by the Blackhawks, will take over as their coach, replacing Trent Yawney.

QUOTE

After losing 12 of 15 games, the Chicago Blackhawks went on the offensive Monday, switching coaches and styles.

The Blackhawks fired defense-oriented coach Trent Yawney, replacing him with assistant Denis Savard -- a Hall of Fame player whose No. 18 hangs from the United Center rafters. With the new coach comes a faster pace.

Good for the Hawks and their fans. Too bad it had to take the owner's death to get some positive change for them.

I am very happy for their fans too. I grew up in Illinois, but didn't discover my love for hockey until moving to Ca. But any way any true fan can get easier access to this wonderful game of hockey is great in my book.

Blackhawks Announce All Games To Be Televised
QUOTE
For the first time in history, the Chicago Blackhawks will televise their entire 82-game regular season schedule and playoff games on both cable and free television.

In conjunction with their current agreement with Comcast SportsNet, the Blackhawks today announced a 3-year agreement with WGN Television that, along with the National Hockey League's network partners, VERSUS and NBC, will air all Blackhawks games – both home and away – for the next three seasons.

"Our fans want to be able to follow our team on a consistent basis from opening night through the playoffs," said Blackhawks Chairman W. Rockwell"Rocky" Wirtz. "That's why we are taking this step forward. Bringing Chicago Blackhawks hockey to our fans on both cable and free television will help us to continue the momentum and enthusiasm we have established this year. The combination of Comcast SportsNet and WGN-TV will give the Blackhawks two vehicles to expose both our young players and our seasoned veterans."

Great for the Blackhawks and their fans
There is no reason an Original 6 franchise should not be watched everyday, especially with their young talent.

Corey Crawford will get another year to prove he's the Blackhawks' goaltender of the future.

The Hawks signed the 23-year-old restricted free agent to a one-year deal Monday that keeps him in the team's long-range mix at goalie.
...
Crawford appeared in five games with the Hawks last season and had a 1-2 record and 2.14 goals-against average. The victory was a 3-0 shutout of the then-defending champion Anaheim Ducks on March 5 in his second career NHL start.

Oh just great ... they'll put him in just to play against us ...

Bowman to become coach or GM?

QUOTE
Don’t be the least bit surprised to see Scotty Bowman as either the GM or the coach of the Chicago Blackhawks before the end of next season.

Bowman joined the Blackhawks Thursday as senior advisor of hockey operations, but those in the industry maintain that nobody should be fooled - Bowman didn’t leave a great situation with the Detroit Red Wings to just sit back and be a consultant in Chicago.

In fact, there are those who maintain Bowman’s hiring is simply greasing the skids for him to take a much more prominent role in the organization, with either GM Dale Tallon or coach Denis Savard, or possibly both, being replaced before long.

It is well-known new Hawks president John McDonough is not a big fan of either Tallon or Savard and that McDonough was the driving force behind the signings of unrestricted free agents Cristobal Huet and Brian Campbell.

In fact, industry insiders maintain Tallon didn’t want to sign either player July 1, but McDonough insisted the Hawks sign them as both hockey and marketing moves...

... All that leaves is an opportunity for Bowman to get back into the game at the management level, either as a GM or coach. But if the Blackhawks have designs on him becoming GM of their team, they might want to check Bowman’s record the only other time he held that job, in Buffalo. He wasn’t a great GM and no coach lasted more than 18 months under his watch.

With McDonough at the helm, the Blackhawks are being driven as much by marketing forces these days as they are by hockey decisions, so hiring a recognizable and successful figure such as Bowman makes a lot of sense.

Expect to see more of Bowman when it comes to determining the Blackhawks’ fortunes this season. THN link

Interesting.

If they send Tallon packing, I bet they wish they could send Kahbibulin, Lang, and the chronically-injured Havlat with him.

Perhaps they could ... the Kings still need to add $13 million just for the right to ice a team.

True.

But Kahbibulin, at least, makes too much sense for the Kings...

As does Mathieu Schneider.

"When I went to Detroit as the coach 15 years ago, the team was really on the upswing," Bowman said during a press conference Thursday. "Looking at what's here for me and for the Hawks, it's a challenge again. I would say the biggest reason is to work with my son. It doesn't happen often in sports, but it is happening here. It's certainly an exciting day for myself and for the family."

Stan Bowman is equally excited. The 2008-09 season will be his eighth with the club, as he's worked his way up from special assistant to the GM. Eight years after first hoping he could one day work with his father, the dream has come to fruition.

"It's a dream come true for me," the younger Bowman said. "When I first started it was in the back of my mind, but I kind of set it aside. I wanted to get my career in motion. Over the last nine months here there's been a lot of changes. Everybody here senses a different atmosphere. Our team performed better. That idea I had a long time ago kind of popped into my head again. It's a great day for everybody."

The Kings SHOULD claim him, but they won't.

Imagine if the Kings had claimed Schneider & Khabibulin! They could have had a defense of:

Jack Johnson/Matt Greene
Mathieu Schneider/Tom Priessing
Drew Doughty/Denis Gauthier

...with goalies:

Nikolai Khabibulin
Jason LaBarbera

That's a lot better than what they have right now. But, their ownership is too cheap to spend the money so they will go with a bad tandem of goalies behind a young defense. Good luck! biggrin.gif
