Lamoriello said he expects Mogilny to compete for a job in training camp and he has apparently talked Malakhov into coming back and reporting to training camp.

The Devils were able to re-sign Elias to a new deal over the summer, which was huge for the franchise. Having a healthy and signed Elias will go a long way in helping New Jersey keep pace with the Rangers and Flyers from the get-go. Coming to terms with Jamie Langenbrunner was also beneficial to the club, as the winger was the Devils' third-leading scorer last year with 53 points in 80 games.
...
Lamoriello now must also find a way to obtain the services of two more vital forwards in Gionta and Gomez, otherwise the Devils will be in very big trouble on offense in the highly competitive Eastern Conference.

More importantly, the New Jersey Devils goalie says he felt doing the book while he was still playing was key.

Here's a strange one: Brian Gionta will pay to attend training camp.

Still unsigned but quite sure a contract eventually will be finalized, Gionta has purchased insurance as a financial safeguard during training camp with the New Jersey Devils.

I'm amazed they haven't made one trade so far, nothing to scrape away at those horrible salaries that will ultimately kill the team.

Something's gotta' give.

For a chunk of change, a piece of the rock will be the next home of the New Jersey Devils.

Prudential Financial Inc. and the NHL team on Monday announced the company will pay $105.3 million over 20 years to call the Devils' new arena the Prudential Center.

I just scoured a couple of Devils forums and I am absolutely freaking surprised at how much some of those fans hate Niedermayer for leaving, but then say that the Ducks would be a joke if they tried to retire his number. I mean, do you hate the guy or do you want to have his number hanging in your building for all time? Which is it?

The Scott Gomez stuff I can understand.

New Jersey Devils' Scott Clemmensen disappointed but not bitter

Scott Clemmensen thought he was prepared, but when Devils' GM Lou Lamoriello told him Tuesday afternoon that he would be going back to Lowell (AHL) because Martin Brodeur was ready to play again, it came as a surprise...

... He said as of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, he hadn't heard from either Brodeur or Weekes, but did get calls from other teammates.

Clemmensen, who'll be an unrestricted free agent, said he wouldn't rule out re-signing with the Devils this summer.

"It still is a possibility," he said. "I don't harbor any ill will with New Jersey. Am I surprised? Yeah. Maybe a little upset. If (re-signing) is an option to me, I will definitely look into it. I'm not going to rule that out. That's kind of a long way off right now."

LINK

Wow.

Clemmensen really got screwed.

I hope Brodeur just gets lit up, and that Clemmensen has an "injury" so that Lamoriello is forced to depend on Weekes. It'll serve him right.

Court deals Devils' Brodeur alimony blow

TRENTON, New Jersey — Days after breaking the NHL record for wins by a goalie, the Devils' Martin Brodeur has been dealt an alimony setback by a New Jersey appeals court.

The court ruled that Brodeur must pay his ex-wife $500,000 a year until 2020.

A lower court originally awarded Brodeur's ex-wife, Melanie DuBois, limited alimony.

Brodeur appealed, asking that he only be required to pay alimony until he retires, which he estimated to be in 2012. DuBois asked for alimony payments until 2024, when their youngest is anticipated to graduate from college.

The court ordered Brodeur to pay alimony until 2020, the year the youngest child graduates high school.

Yikes...

He becomes the all-time winnigest NHL goalie, and on the list as one of the all-time losingest ex's, all in the same week.

Oh well, it's not like he doesn't have plenty more money...

I'd really like to hear your thoughts on this, Cassie.

I tend to be somewhat red-necked, but not so sure that the dollar amount isn't a proper determination. All the zeros behind the number make it seem crazy, but put in perspective it's not outrageous. To me, what we pay people to play games is the truly outrageous (and just look at our politicians... wink.gif ).

What I question is the number of years he is ordered to pay that amount. Through the end of his current contract, sure. But for 8 more years after that? Maybe the court leaves it up to him to seek relief from the award after his income goes down?

But I relate to your initial reaction. That's a damn big number.

I can understand it for child support, but for alimony? Well, I have my opinions about alimony and I'll admit that biases me. This sure does make a strong case for A. Get a freakin' prenup and B. It's cheaper to keep her.

I think Marty signed up for the "I Deserve to Be Ripped a New One" plan by boinking his (ex)wife's sister when she lived with them as their babysitter (Reference).

Brent Sutter has stepped down as head coach of the New Jersey Devils, citing personal and family reasons.

"It might not be the right decision for some people and that's fine," Sutter said during a Tuesday conference call from Red Deer, Alta. "I don't look at it like I am quitting on anything. I threw two years of my life and made a big commitment 3,000 miles away from where my life was and tried to do everything I possibly could to accomplish a goal.

"So by me doing that my life has suffered in other areas, and those areas to me are bigger than the game."

Brendan Shanahan agrees to terms

QUOTE
Brendan Shanahan will be back with the Devils in 2009-10.

The 40-year-old unrestricted free agent left wing has agreed to terms and will be ready to go for the start of training camp on Sept. 12, an NHL source said. The sides spent Tuesday finalizing the paperwork and the official announcement could come later today.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said last week that he wanted Shanahan, who had received interest from other teams, to be sure about returning to the Devils and the role he would be playing, but expected something to happen by the end of this week.

Shanahan will be returning for a 22nd NHL season. He is the league's active leader with 656 regular season goals...
