Islanders draft pick Blaho killed in crash

Slovak hockey player Stefan Blaho, a fourth-round pick of the New York Islanders, has died in a car accident. He was 21.

The International Ice Hockey Federation said the crash happened just after midnight Tuesday near the Slovak town of Krasnany. That evening Blaho had scored a goal for Slovak champion MsHK Zilina, the team he was about to sign for, in an exhibition game against Banska Bystrica.

Charles Wang's N.Y. Islanders is about to launch the most extensive, ambitious Internet-based TV service ever offered by an American sports team: Islanders TV.


According to New York's Newsday For now, the "station" is available (at no cost) only to season subscribers. But within the next month or two, the team plans to offer it to anyone with a broadband connection for a yet- to-be-decided fee.

Former first-round draft pick Sean Bergenheim, who opted to play in Russia rather than accept what he believed was a lowball offer by the Islanders, would like to return and is willing to apologize to owner Charles Wang. But if the owner won't bend his rule against signing players who weren't in training camp, agent Mark Gandler said Bergenheim will then request a trade.

NEW YORK -- A former co-owner of the New York Islanders was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday in a $400 million accounting fraud scandal at one of the world's largest software companies.

Sanjay Kumar, the 44-year-old former chief executive of Computer Associates International, pleaded guilty in April to obstruction of justice and securities fraud charges at the company, which since has become known as CA Inc.

NEW YORK/TORONTO -- New York Islanders defenseman Sean Hill has been suspended 20 games for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. The suspension begins with tonight's Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinal game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Milbury steps down as NYI VP

The Mike Milbury hockey era with the New York Islanders is officially over.

The team has confirmed that Milbury has resigned from his full-time position in the organization, however, he will remain as an advisor to owner Charles Wang on Project Hope, a youth hockey program geared to growing the sport in China.

Chris Simon is taking a leave of absence after his match penalty this past weekend.

Chris Simon left the New York Islanders on Monday, saying he needed time away from hockey following his latest penalty for attempting to injure an opponent.

Simon missed the first five games of this season while completing a 25-game ban -- his sixth NHL suspension -- meted out in March. He could be in line for another long penalty after he took down and stepped on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu last weekend.

"The actions of Chris Simon on Saturday do not reflect what the New York Islanders stand for," team owner Charles Wang said in a statement. "They were reckless, potentially dangerous and against our team concept of grit, character and heart.

"We know Chris as a respected teammate and as a gracious man away from the playing surface and believe strongly that he has earned our continued support. The Islanders are going to provide some time for Chris away from the team and give him the counseling he needs and the compassion he deserves. When Chris is completely ready, he will be a member of our team again."

"There were several factors that were considered in imposing the largest suspension in NHL history for an on-ice incident," explained NHL Vice President Colin Campbell.

"While fortunate, Mr. Ruutu suffered no serious injury as a result of Chris Simon's actions, the deliberate act of kicking an opponent with a skate blade, especially when that opponent is in a vulnarable position, is and always has been a repugnant and totally unacceptable act in the game of hockey."

The job of expanding the hockey vocabulary belongs to Alex Peng and Justin Chang, a pair of New York-based broadcasters who are calling Islander home games in Mandarin. They currently can be heard by flipping the SAP button on Fox Sports Net and the MSG Network in New York. The ultimate goal is to spread it to an untapped Asian market.

"I think Dougie has a lot in his tank, he always keeps himself in great shape. He just wants to play."

Guerin and Weight aren't ruling out wins, but they also realize the responsibility of being veterans on a rebuilding team.

Sources tell TSN New York Islanders defenceman Thomas Pock was given a five-game suspension for his elbow to the head of Ottawa Senators' winger Ryan Shannon last night.

Pock received a 5-minute major and game misconduct for the incident.
