Nicklas Backstrom, the Capitals' top draft pick last month, informed the club Monday he won't be coming to Washington next season but will instead continue playing in his native Sweden for another year.

The news was not totally unexpected but does not bode well for the rebuilding Capitals, who are in need of speed and skill at the center position. The 18-year-old Backstrom was taken fourth overall and was pegged as the eventual setup man for star left wing Alex Ovechkin.

Ovechkin yesterday appeared to have the solid backing of coach Glen Hanlon to be Washington's next captain. The title has been vacant only since Wednesday, when captain Jeff Halpern accepted a free agent offer from Dallas.

Ovechkin says he's not ready for 'C'

Both the Washington Post and Washington Times speculated in July that head coach Glen Hanlon was considering handing the captaincy to Ovechkin, chosen last season's top rookie in the NHL. Fellow phenom Sidney Crosby is reportedly a candidate for captain in Pittsburgh.

Ovechkin says it won't happen for him this season.

What about Semin. He's on their roster. And I think putting Ovie in for the Cap would be wise. He could lead, and he's a great guy, I think he'd be an oustanding captain.

Chris Clark named captain of Washington

The 30-year-old winger becomes the 13th captain in franchise history after Jeff Halpern left via free agency this summer.

''The true leader in our dressing room has always been our goalie Olaf Kolzig but it's a technicality (league rules) that he can't be the captain,'' Clark told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. ''So I really had not thought too much about it until Monday when (coach) Glen Hanlon called me in for a meeting and told me about it. It's a huge honour.''

That very question stumped Washington Capitals coach Glen Hanlon, who paused 5 seconds before giving an answer.

“That’s hard,” Hanlon finally said. “I’m not sure what Glen Sather said about Gretzky after his first year. I should have phoned and asked him.”

i still remember back like what 5-6 years ago when the planned a new jersey that had something to the effect of an eagle head and it was apparently so hideous that there own fans begged them not to do it..
i remember seeing pictures but since they never went thru with them itd be hard to find now.

and the logo looks like a computer made image put on there

I think that would look ugly. I think the 'D' looks strange by itself, but when you add the 'ucks' it looks good. I have come to love these jerseys and I hope they don't stray too far when they have to change the uniform for the RBK EDGE Uniforum.

It's not a very thankful day (or maybe it is) as Glen Hanlon was fired by the Washington Capitals.

The Caps began the season 3-0, before losing 15 of their next 18 games.



Hanlon is a former coach of the Portland Pirates.

A few decades ago, Bruce Boudreau was in the right place at the right time and wound up as a hockey-playing extra in the movie "Slap Shot."

Who knew so much time would pass before his next moment in the spotlight?

After years of shuttling between the NHL and minor leagues as a player, followed by years of climbing the rungs of the minors as a successful coach, Boudreau finally is getting a chance he long thought he deserved.

Ovechkin on a Segway

"Hey Segway guy," the Park Police officer was shouting at Alex Ovechkin. "You can't ride in there."

Ovechkin, wearing his red Caps jersey and yes, riding a Segway, scooted out of the tourist-dotted maze that encircles the National Christmas tree, smiling his gap-toothed smile.

"I'm sorry officer, he got away from me," apologized Mary Ann Melville, a tour guide from Capital Segway.

The officer gave a stern lecture, something about where and where not to ride your Segway, and about how his sergeant was getting irritated. Ovechkin scooted about in circles and waited for the speech to end.

"All right, see you!" he finally said to the officer, and sped off.
