If you sign with the intention of trading, but don't get any trade, you are stuck with the salary. Same situation with Vish - if we don't get anything for him, we still have to pay him. The Sabres don't want to roll the dice with this one and clearly felt they couldn't get a reasonable trade for him and preferred to walk.
