Atlantic Division report card

QUOTE
New Jersey Devils
Greatest need: Figuring out how to ice a team within the salary cap.

Philadelphia Flyers
Greatest needs: Speed on the blue line, resolving the Keith Primeau situation, getting Simon Gagne signed, and staying under the cap.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Greatest need: Veteran stabilizers to give the kids time to mature.

New York Rangers
Greatest needs: Dependable second-line scoring, a legitimate top-two defenseman.

New York Islanders
Greatest needs: Juicing the worst offense in the Eastern Conference, revamping the blue line, upgrading their abysmal special-teams play.

Northeast Division report card

QUOTE
Buffalo Sabres
Greatest needs: Resolving the goaltending situation, re-signing a number of key RFAs without busting the cap, and what to do about Tim Connolly?

Boston Bruins

Greatest needs: A change in culture, a top-two defenseman; speed and skill up front; signing the team's young core forwards.

Ottawa Senators

Greatest needs: A veteran goalie in net rather than the press box, scoring from the second line, more mobility on the blueline.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Greatest needs: A no. 1 goaltender, a replacement for former coach Pat Quinn, speed up front.

Montreal Canadiens

Greatest needs: A scoring winger for the second line, a veteran top-four defender.
