GM Keenan and Panthers part ways
The Florida Panthers and their general manager are not waiting together to see how the 2006-07 NHL season will unfold.

I got an e-mail on my blackberry saying that this was going to happen because of a rift building between Martin and Keenan but I took it as BS because I couldn't picture Keenan leaving Florida anymore than I could Mike Milbury leaving the New York Islanders.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports sources claim former Florida Panthers GM Mike Keenan was forced out of his job after losing a power struggle to head coach Jacques Martin, who took over as GM yesterday. It's believed Keenan was dissatisfied over Martin's coaching, even considering firing Martin and taking over the coaching reins, which led to a "frosty relationship" between the two.

Garrioch also suggest Martin's decision to fire goalie coach Clint Malarchuk didn't sit well with Roberto Luongo and led to the trade with Vancouver, which also didn't please Martin. Garrioch noted Keenan and Martin were lifelong friends prior to being reunited with the Panthers.

GM Mike Keenan's surprise resignation as Panthers GM appears to have come down to a failing relationship with coach Jacques Martin -- and Martin's close relationship with Florida owner Alan Cohen.

"I know that he (Cohen) likes Jacques a great deal and respects him as a hockey person a great deal," former Panthers GM Rick Dudley said yesterday. "That much I know for sure, because Alan has told me that before."

"No, I don't think there was a breakdown with my relationship with Mike," Martin told The Canadian Press in an interview Thursday. "I think I've always had a good relationship with Mike. I think we worked well together. I think the organization, the ownership, for whatever reason, listened to Mike when he came to them.

"All I know is that ownership came to me, Mr. Cohen, and offered me the dual role. At that point I wasn't planning on that but when I sat back and looked at it, I said sure, it's a challenge. But I feel good about this challenge."

The Panthers can have whatever GM they want (except Burke). No offense, they're not a winning type of team. Sure they have Nieuwendyk, Bertuzzi, Auld, and Bouwmeester, but they won't get any farther than before. In my opinion that is.

Keenan and Panthers agree on settlement
QUOTE

Mike Keenan and the Florida Panthers have found a way to part peacefully, although it took several days for the two sides to get to this point.

''I am pleased to report that I have resolved all outstanding issues with the Florida Panthers relating to my employment and my departure on an amicable basis,'' Keenan told TSN.
