OK Reb and Jason...it's fish flinging time again! fish.gif

With all our newbies this year and the unpredictable Yeomans in net (not sold on this guy yet)I don't really know what to expect from my 'Birds this season. Could be great...could be grim. Jackson and Stamler should dominate on the blueline but they'll have to look much better than they did last season to lead our rookie defense. Team captain Aaron Gagnon will be back and will be one of the WHL's leading scorers but there are still a lot of question marks on offense as well.

Everett looks like they have another strong team, so it will be more infernal cowbells I fear. The 'Tips coach has already gotten suspended this year for inappropriate discipline (made the team ride home on the bus in their equipment and practice following a pre-season game loss), so that may mean trouble for them. We can always hope for a mutiny!

How's Portland looking?

Ooooh...I know, I heard that score while listening to Saturday's game. The TBirds started the season on the road, again, and got a split with Prince George this weekend. Saturday is opening night at the Key Arena and I can't wait to see some hockey!! banana.gif

Tomorrow is the home opener..hooray!! post-876-1130305232.gif We are playing the Vancouver Giants, so this will be a big test for our new kids right off the bat. It's Seattle's 30th anniversary year so we will have new jerseys and all sorts of special goodies this season.

Winter Hawks Sweep Home Weekend with 3-2 Shoot Out Win
Dean Vrooman - October 1, 2006

16-year-old rookie Tristan King from Elk River, Minnesota ended the longest shoot out in Western Hockey League history by lifting a backhand shot into the net in the 12th round as the Portland Winter Hawks edged the Kamloops Blazers 3-2 Sunday in Memorial Coliseum.

Well, the 'Birds are now 1-1-1, I think they are still keeping seperate stats for shoot out losses...right? We did not prevail against the tough Vancouver squad, but I think the kids showed up against them pretty well. Our power play seems to have picked up where it left off, which is not a good thing, but we did take them to the shootout so at least we put up a good fight. The only player to get a goal in the shootout, Vancouver's Repik, was very unsportsmanlike following his goal...doing something that looked like paddling an invisible canoe with his stick and taunting the Seattle bench...it's too bad a good game had to end on that sour note. It was fun to see all our buddies at the Key again, and find out what everyone was up to this summer!

I'm sorry they didn't win the game but at least a good time was had by our T-Bird connection...good things are sure to come this season. I'm just glad the Hawks rebounded from two difficult road losses and took care of business at home. Klinkhammer is already showing leadership to the young Hawks!!! ana-ban.gif smile.gif

And unfortunately the 'Tips are the team to beat this season. They are 3-0 so far! crazy.gif

I'm gonna miss Klink..and all the silly "hammertime" jokes we used to crack when he scored. I'll enjoy seeing him and Mucha when we play the 'Hawks this season...you guys have a good young goalie on your hands as well. I'm still not completely sold on Yeomans...it's weird having him in Seattle after being a rival for so long. I miss Opsahl! bye2.gif

It won't matter to me whether it's the 'Birds or the 'Hawks that do the crushing.
I yust want the 'Tips crushed!

Well, the 'Birds are in Tri tonight...I hope we start winning some games here! The weekend is busy with 3 games back to back, Vancouver away and home, then Spokane at home. Spokane and Tri have improved this year, making the playing field in this division more even...except for the 'Tips of course who are pulling away early with a strong team. dry.gif

Was going to back to back games this weekend, but Canucks season and half season ticket holders have been invited to an event at Playland with the team. The half seasons usually don't get invited to the cool stuff like this, so Caduck and I are going for sure! They have said no autographs or posed pictures, but we'll see about that. I should study the roster because I don't even know who half the players are this season...but Nazzy and Luongo will be there, and that's all I really need to know! dribble.gif

Another shoot-out loss last night. @#!!@#! ranting.gif
I hated the shoot-out already, and this is doing nothing to endear the concept to me. I'll always maintain that it's a hokey skills-competition excercise and no way to decide a game. Even if we do start winning them.

Vancouver on Friday up next...a team that is 9-0 for the season so far. This is gonna be a looong season. dry.gif

ESPN.com - Winter Hawks Hockey in Top 10
ESPN.com has named "Junior Hockey with the Portland Winter Hawks" as one of the top ten hockey experiences in North America according to a recent column by Terry Frei.

Excerpt:

"First, sample one of the game's most heated rivalries, driving on Interstate 5 to catch barn-to-barn Western Hockey League games between the Winter Hawks and the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The best set this season is February 2 in Portland at the glass palace, Memorial Coliseum, which is where Cam Neely, Glen Wesley and Marian Hossa, among others, played; and where Bill Walton played when he didn't talk at all, much less so darned much. Stick around after the game as long-time radio voice Dean "Scooter" Vrooman hosts "Hawk Talk" and visits with a Portland player on the ice, with the sound heard both in the arena and on the radio. Then catch the rematch the next night at Seattle.

Eat at Huber's in Portland, having the turkey and the famous Spanish coffee afterwards. Dine at Ray's Boathouse in Seattle, but be sure you allow enough time because of the gridlock traffic and take great care not to get on the Lake Washington bridge accidentally because there's no turning back for miles.

There also is a slight chance it could be raining, so take an umbrella. And don't let it bother you that you're pretty much watching a bunch of Canadian teenagers playing under the Canadian Hockey League umbrella.

If you want to extend the trip, you could follow the Hawks to Kelowna, Prince George, and Kamloops, all in British Columbia."
