Tune for the day:

from the moment you wake up
you cannot feel free
there are so many things in this world
you can't see
just don't keep on leaving
your dreams behind
have a heart to see you'll get
trapped in your mind

it's like an impurity in your mind
furtive ruin that
hails from behind
get rid of the demon
that darkens your sun
go on... go on...
leave no deed undone!

you don't really depend
on material plight
and the way you live...
it is simply not right
you just have to get rid
of your own demands
fight against yourself
for a second chance

no escape
every further step you'll ever make
will drive you on to me
and i will set you free

sometimes it's so easy
just to be scared
no-one promised
your life would be fair
there's always a reason for you to run
away... with me... leave no deed undone

Wolfsheim "Leave no deed undone"

TSN's Ice Chips

QUOTE
Updated Sunday, September 24

Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero said yesterday that Penguins management hopes to have a better idea about how long Evgeni Malkin might be out by either tomorrow afternoon or Tuesday morning. Malkin suffered a dislocated left shoulder during his preseason debut Wednesday night after he and teammate John LeClair collided behind the net at the Moncton (New Brunswick) Coliseum. Shero would not say whether the possibility of surgery has been ruled out. - Ottawa Sun

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson and W Peter Schaefer remained off the ice yesterday to rest their tender groins. Neither players' injury is considered serious, but the Senators want to be careful, which means it's doubtful either player will see any action this weekend. "We'll see how they are in the next couple of days. They're just going to work out in the gym and we'll leave it at that right now. Then, make some decisions on them down the road," said Senators coach Bryan Murray. That's part of the reason the Senators are keeping extra players around because with four games in four nights, the club is going to need all these bodies. - Ottawa Sun

Netminder Justin Pogge will not be making his Maple Leafs debut any time soon. Barring injuries, the top goaltending prospect in the Toronto organization will not get into a pre-season game. - Toronto Sun

The Canadiens have given up six power-play goals on 25 opportunities, which means that the penalty-killers are working on a 76-per-cent success rate. - Montreal Gazette

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Saturday that defenseman Danny Markov's strained left medial collateral ligament injury isn't serious. But Markov won't play in any upcoming exhibitions or practice for a few days. - Detroit Free Press

The Jackets' two highest-paid defensemen, Adam Foote (sprained knee) and Bryan Berard (offseason back surgery), have yet to play in a preseason game, although both are expected to be ready for the regular season. - Columbus Dispatch

The Avalanche still does not have further news on the condition of left wing Steve Konowalchuk, who left training camp after abnormalities surfaced on an electrocardiogram. The team hopes to get a prognosis early this week. - Denver Post

Avs' Ian Laperriere, 32, is happy in Colorado. He is coming off a career-best 21-goal season and enters this season as one of the Avalanche's alternate captains. He hopes he can duplicate his statistics of last year, but isn't going to judge his game by stats. - Denver Post

Goalie Brian Boucher and the Hawks have agreed on a one-year contract. Boucher is expected to be Nikolai Khabibulin's backup. - Daily Herald

Hurricanes forward Justin Williams was back in action Saturday after suffering a bruised jaw in Wednesday's scrimmage. Watch for John Grahame, Trevor Letowski, David Tanabe and Glen Wesley to make their preseason debuts tonight in Columbus. - News Observer

Flames right-winger Darren McCarty, who has yet to dip his toe into game action, said he needs just a couple of outings, preferably bunched closer to the regular season's start. So he's aiming for all three tilts next week. - Calgary Herald

Flames forward Eric Nystrom, who recorded a game-high five hits against Edmonton, arrived at the rink Friday with his right arm in a sling. Nothing serious, though. "Eric's shoulder is a bad bruise," said coach Playfair, "so that's good news for us." - Calgary Herald

Flames' Dion Phaneuf, in consecutive games, logged more than 30 minutes. "At the end of the day, top players in the National Hockey League end up playing 25 to 30 minutes as a defence tandem," said coach Jim Playfair. "It's not something that'll be foreign to him over the course of the season, it's just not something we'd planned on happening this early."- Calgary Herald

While coach Dave Lewis has not finalized his lines, five of his forwards-Marco Sturm, Patrice Bergeron, Brad Boyes, Marc Savard, and Glen Murray-will skate somewhere on the top two lines. Lewis wants a checking line, with P.J. Axelsson, Wayne Primeau, and Shean Donovan being the likely candidates. Versatile veteran Mark Mowers, who could also be used as a checker, has had a solid camp. - Boston Globe

Phil Kessel has to play on one of the Bruins' top two lines, or he doesn't play in Boston this season? Don't be so sure. After weighing that oft-stated opinion last week, GM Peter Chiarelli said, "I understand that thinking. You want him to get his minutes, in order for his game to develop. But I like him at center, a lot, and maybe he could center a third line, then pick up minutes on the power play, move around a little. I don't know." Kessel has impressed to the point where he might have to play his way off the roster rather than onto it. - Boston Globe

Following Montreal's second exhibition game vs. the Bruins, new Habs coach Guy Carbonneau said he was disappointed in the Sergei Samsonov-Mike Ribiero-Alexei Kovalev line. hile, last year's camp sensation, winger Guillaume Latendresse, has been getting the locals in a froth again with his exciting play. "That's fun," said Carbonneau. "But the fans won't put him on this team." - Boston Globe

The Blues' Keith Tkachuk on the Wild's projected all-Slovak line of Martin Gaborik, Pavol Demitra, and Branko Radivojevic: "They'll be unstoppable this year-absolutely unstoppable." Jacques Lemaire will attack with a second line of ex-Bruin Brian Rolston teamed up with Todd White and Pierre-Marc Bouchard. - Boston Globe

The Devils sent ailing winger Alexander Mogilny to another doctor, who confirmed that Mogilny's arthritic hip has rendered him unable to play. Now the question remains whether the NHL will allow the Devils to drop his $3.5 million from the salary cap, as provided by the CBA's Long-Term Injury Exemption. Key sticking point: Mogilny was 35 when he signed the deal last summer, and the CBA doesn't allow the over-35 gang to be easily dropped from the cap. In other words, summon the arbitrators. - Boston Globe

While Yan Stastny vies for a job here with the Bruins, his brother Paul, ex- of the University of Denver, has had an impressive first training camp with the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche, with aging pivot Joe Sakic centering a No. 1 line with Milan Hejduk and Andrew Brunette, are in need of young legs and scoring depth. Paul Stastny collected eight shots, and popped in the OT winner, last week in an exhibition game against the Red Wings. He pivoted a line that had fellow newbies Wojtek Wolski and Chris Steward, the No. 6 pick overall in this year's draft. - Boston Globe

The Bruins are expected to make their choice for captain (hint: his first name begins with a "Z") public next week, most likely with a day or two to go before the start of the regular season Oct. 6 in Tampa. - Boston Globe

Thanks for reminding me to go back and check on that caption. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they got this one wrong. Perhaps they meant #26 Mike Van Ryn instead ...
