Tune for the day:

Lots of surprises in store
This isn't a party it's a whole lot more

We've had enough of this blind man's bluff
You've kept us in the dark for long enough
This is more than a party

Keep telling us we're to have fun
Then take all the ice cream so we've got none
This is more than a party

The failed magician waves his wand
And in an instant the laughter's gone
This is more than a party

Lots of surprises in store
This isn't a party it's a whole lot more
More than a party

Depeche Mode "More than a party"

TSN's Ice Chips

QUOTE
Bruins' goaltenders Hannu Toivonen and Tim Thomas will each play one more full game before the start of the regular season. One will face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday and the other will get the Rangers at the TD Banknorth Garden Saturday. - Boston Globe

Avalanche captain Joe Sakic won't play in tonight's game against Detroit at the Pepsi Center. He suffered a hip flexor injury in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Los Angeles in Las Vegas. "It's a very minor strain," head coach Joel Quenneville said. "He said he's going to be fine." - Rocky Mountain News

Blue Jackets' center Alexander Svitov was given a try in the middle of one of the top lines and suffered a shoulder injury in the third period. There was a possibility Svitov might fill in for top center Sergei Fedorov (sprained left shoulder, out for up to six weeks). Svitov, 23, played last night between Fredrik Modin and Anson Carter before he got hurt during his second shift of the third period. He might have a dislocated shoulder. Team spokesman Todd Sharrock said the team will release details on Monday afternoon. - Columbus Dispatch

Stars' center Patrik Stefan, who had a sore hip that kept him out of Friday's exhibition game, returned to the lineup Sunday and played 15 minutes, 58 seconds, taking two shots and winning six of 14 faceoffs. - Dallas Star-Telegram

Red Wings' Johan Franzen spent the exhibition win against the Panthers on Sunday as Pavel Datsyuk's left wing, a role he might get to keep. Franzen also got some rare power play time. - Detroit Free Press

The pain in the Panthers defenseman's surgically repaired right wrist still throbs, and his strength still isn't where he hoped it would be. But for the first time this season, Van Ryn was in Florida's starting lineup Sunday night. He logged just over 22 minutes. - Miami Herald

Senators' Wade Redden left game in the 1st period after his groin tightened up. He is the 3rd Senator to have groin troubles this preseason. Alfredsson and Schaefer are the others.

Senators' Anton Volchenkov broke the middle finger on his right hand in the final minutes of Saturday's 4-3 victory against the Flyers in Philadelphia and will be out for a week. - Ottawa Citizen

Rangers' head coach Tom Renney was disappointed in the powerplay on Sunday and used forward Matt Cullen on the point. - Newsday

Bill Guerin scored four goals and the Blues won their first preseason game 5-3 over Atlanta at Scottrade Center. - St Louis Post Dispatch

Maple Leafs' Brendan Bell left the dressing room on crutches last night after Toronto's 3-2 exhibition game loss to the Ottawa Senators in Halifax. He was taken to hospital for examination, but there was no report on the severity of the injury - Globe And Mail

Canucks' captain Markus Naslund played right wing on a line with Daniel and Henrik Sedin on Sunday. Daniel scored a pair of power-play goals while his twin brother had two assists as the Canucks earned their first victory of the NHL exhibition season after two losses. - Winnipeg Sun

Canucks' Rick Rypien has become the first notable casualty of Vancouver's pre-season. Rypien, who is trying to make the club as a fourth-line energy player, sprained his right thumb in a fight Friday night in Anaheim and will likely miss the remainder of the exhibition campaign that concludes Saturday. - Vancouver Sun

At the Oilers' skate on Monday morning the lines were as follows; Smyth / Horcoff / Lupul, Torres / Sykora / Hemsky, Moreau / Stoll / Pisani, Jacques / Reasoner / Thoreson, Winchester / Schremp / Almtorp and Mikhnov / Peterson / Pouliot. The D pairings were; Smith / Tjarqqvist, Staios / Smid, Green / Bergeron, Syvret / Gilbert and Young / Basaillon.

Maple Leafs' Jiri Tlusty will play the rest of the exhibition season with the Toronto Marlies. If he proves he can compete in situations as a pro, there is a good chance he might stay in the AHL but until that happens he seems to be headed to the Soo Greyhounds.
