Tune for the day:

WELL WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOIN'
BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'VE BEEN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE KNOWIN'
BUT WE CAN'T SAY WHAT WE'VE SEEN
AND WE'RE NOT LITTLE CHILDREN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT
AND THE FUTURE IS CERTAIN
GIVE US TIME TO WORK IT OUT

We're on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride

I'm feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know,
We're on the road to paradise
Here we go, here we go

CHORUS

Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there

We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere

There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
and it's all right, baby, it's all right

And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

We're on a road to nowhere

Talking Heads "Road to nowhere"

TSN's Ice Chips

QUOTE
Updated Tuesday, September 26

Judging by his training camp, Ryan Shannon may soon have another taste of the good life. The diminutive forward is making a strong case for a Ducks roster spot with five points in four exhibition games. - LA Times

The bid of defenseman Braydon Coburn to make the Thrashers' roster hit a setback Sunday night as the 21-year-old separated his right shoulder. The Thrashers did not have an on-ice workout Monday, but after a team meeting, Coburn, the eighth overall pick in the 2003 NHL draft, was scheduled to see doctors. The team did not release a timeline for Coburn's return, but coach Bob Hartley said the injury is "not major." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Thus far, Zdeno Chara has only been used at the point on the power play. Bruins coach Dave Lewis isn't opposed to throwing the 6-9, 260-pound defenseman in front of the net, as Ottawa did on occasion, but he is a bit leery given the injury factor. - Boston Herald

Hurricanes' Ryan Bayda had two assists on Sunday to bolster his case to make the club. Playing with Rod Brind'Amour and Justin Williams, Bayda is part of a four-way tie for the Hurricanes' preseason scoring lead with three points. - News Observer

Patrick Sharp looks like a much different player from the one the Blackhawks had last season. He has two goals, both on the power play, and three points in his three exhibition games. His speed gives coach Trent Yawney flexibility to play him at center or wing and the 'Hawks have also used him on the penalty kill. - Chicago Tribune

Goaltender Corey Crawford was among five players sent to Norfolk leaving Sebastien Caron and Brian Boucher to fight for the backup job in the Blackhawks' net. They have three more preseason games to make their cases, Wednesday at St. Louis, Thursday at Florida and Saturday at Minnesota. - Chicago Sun Times

Blackhawks' rookies Dave Bolland, Mike Blunden and Adam Burish have had impressive camps but it's likely at least two of the first-year pros, Bolland and Blunden, will start the season at Norfolk. - Daily Herald Times

Due to injuries for the Blue Jackets, rookie Gilbert Brule might now be the top center. Manny Malhotra will get more minutes. Mark Hartigan might emerge as an effective stopgap. David Vyborny, who normally plays the right wing, will have to pull time in the middle until the injured players heal. - Columbus Dispatch

Oilers' coach Craig MacTavish is contemplating playing Ryan Smyth on the left side with Shawn Horcoff at centre and Joffrey Lupul on the right wing as his first line to start the season. The second line will be Petr Sykora at pivot with Raffi Torres on the left side and Ales Hemsky on the right. Expect to see Jarret Stoll between Ethan Moreau and Fernando Pisani. The fourth line is up in the air, with centre Marty Reasoner the only sure thing. Impressive rookie Patrick Thoresen, who can play the left or right side, has the inside track for one spot. Expect Thoresen to play in at least two of the final three games. - Edmonton Sun

Guillaume Latendresse has had a great camp for the Canadiens and had a solid game on Monday night. He finished the night with two goals and an assist, made a big-league move for the go-ahead goal. He held off Ottawa veteran Jamie Allison as he motored up the left side and threw the puck at the net as he was pulled to the ice. - Montreal Gazette

No one would blame veteran forward Sergei Brylin for hoping that NHL decision-makers will allow the Devils to eliminate Alexander Mogilny's $3.5 million salary from counting against the $44 million cap because of chronic hip problems. If the league grants cap relief by allowing the Devils to remove Mogilny's salary under the classification of a long-term injury, it would give Brylin a better chance at staying around with his $1.52 million salary. - Star Ledger

Centre John Madden, who underwent hernia surgery almost eight weeks ago, practiced for the first time yesterday at Codey Arena in West Orange and didn't rule out being ready for the season opener Oct. 6. - Star Ledger

Darius Kasparaitis was in Monday's lineup after receiving a tough-love message from Rangers' coach Tom Renney, who suspected the veteran defenseman had been coddling himself in his return from offseason shoulder and groin surgeries. "I was still feeling pain in the abdominal area at the start of camp, so I was pacing myself to get ready for the start of the season," said Kasparaitis. "But Tom told me I had to pick it up and play with more intensity. ... I guess he was just trying to send the message that I have to work harder." - New York Post

Lars Jonsson made the cut. Alexandre Picard did not. The Flyers cut down to 25 players yesterday - two more players still have to disappear - and will go with eight defensemen for the rest of this week as the preseason closes. Jonsson, the 24-year-old free agent from Sweden, made the cut and is assured of making the roster, probably as a power-play specialist. - Philadelphia Inquirer

Two players are vying for the Coyotes' backup goalie spot, but there's only one job available. They are Mike Morrison and David LeNeveu. "It's a tough decision to make...We're not going to rush into it," coach Wayne Gretzky said Monday. - East Valley Tribune

The Canucks' lines for their game with the Sharks on Tuesday are expected to be: D Sedin / H Sedin / Naslund, Bulis / Morrison / Cooke, Green / Linden / Santala, Pyatt / Kessler / Hansen. The D pairing are expected to be: Ohlund / Edler, Salo / Krajicek and Mitchell / Bourdon. Roberto Luongo is expected to be in net. For the Sharks, Joe Thornton will not play. He took a shot off the right foot in last nights game.

The Senators' lines for their game on Wednesday are expected to be: Schaefer / Fisher / Alfredsson, Vermette / McAmmond / Neil, Hamel / Kelly / McGrattan, Hennesey / Kaigorodov / Payer. The blueline will feature: Phillips / Meszaros, Barinka / Preissing, Allison / Hedlund. Ray Emery should start in net with Martin Gerber as back-up.

It will be Alfredsson and Schaefer's first game back since suffering groin strains last week. Alexei Kaigorodov continues to be less than impressive at camp. slated to be the teams #2 centre he has looked out of place, failing to create anything offensively. That could mean the Russian rookie will start the year in Binghamton and opening up a spot for someone like Josh Hennesey, Serge Payer or Denis Hamel. Hamel, who scored 56 goals last season in the AHL, has been one of Ottawa's best players in camp. Also it was cut down day as 18 players were reassigned (3 to junior and 15 to Binghamton). No suprises among the group. Ottawa's roster is now at 28 players. - Brent Wallace, TSN
