TSN's Ice Chips

QUOTE
Updated Saturday, November 18

Atlanta Thrashers: Thrashers D Niclas Havelid will miss Wednesday's game at Washington to return to Sweden for the funeral of his mother, who died recently. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Boston Bruins: Tim Thomas will be back in goal tonight, bidding for his (and the team's) fourth consecutive victory. - Boston Herald

Carolina Hurricanes: Carolina D Tim Gleason (shoulder) missed his ninth consecutive game; D Niclas Wallin (groin) missed his fourth consecutive game. Both players practiced Friday morning. - Raleigh News & Observer

Washington Capitals: Capitals captain Chris Clark missed the game after having three teeth knocked out when a puck hit him in the face Wednesday against Boston. He won't play Saturday, either. - Herald-Sun

Chicago Blackhawks: C Michal Handzus had surgery Thursday on the torn ACL in his left knee. Hawks general manager Dale Tallon didn't rule out Handzus being ready to play by mid-March - Chicago Tribune

Columbus Blue Jackets: LW Jody Shelley (finger) did not practice yesterday and is unlikely to play tonight. - Columbus Dispatch

Dallas Stars: RW Jere Lehtinen (leg) is questionable. LW Steve Ott (ankle) is out. - Dallas Morning News

Detroit Red Wings: Placed D Jiri Fischer (out since last November with a heart ailment) on long-term injured reserve. G Stefan Liv and forwards Evan McGrath and Darryl Bootland were called up from Grand Rapids to fill a lineup absent four regulars. Jason Williams (neck) is on injured reserve, and the Wings added three more to IR: Tomas Holmstrom (groin) and D Niklas Kronwall (groin), retroactive to Nov. 10, and G Chris Osgood (left wrist), backdated to Sunday. Liv was brought in for a backup should Joey MacDonald play tonight at Edmonton, because the Wings don't want Dominik Hasek to dress as a backup and risk having to put him in without a long warm-up. - Detroit Free Press

Florida Panthers: G Ed Belfour is expected to start against the Islanders tonight, earning his second consecutive start and fifth in seven games. - South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Montreal Canadiens: G Cristobal Huet, who gets the call tonight and thus breaks the coach's two-games-at-a-time netminding rotation. D Francis Bouillon, still recovering from offseason surgery on his left knee, practiced with the team, but has not yet been cleared to play.- Montreal Gazette

Nashville Predators: : LW Scottie Upshall will not play tonight against Columbus, sidelined by a groin strain. Trotz said there was a possibility the injury may be severe enough to put Upshall on injured reserve. D Mikko Lehtonen has been put under observation after taking an elbow to the head from Minnesota's Pascal Dupuis on Thursday. - Tennesseean

New Jersey Devils: C Scott Gomez (groin strain) skated on his own Thursday, but will miss his sixth game in a row tonight. Julien wouldn't say if Gomez would join the team on its five-game road trip, which begins Saturday in Toronto. - Bergen Record

New York Islanders: D Chris Campoli was a healthy scratch for the second straight game because Nolan chose not to tamper with success after Wednesday's shutout win in Dallas. - Newsday

Pittsburgh Penguins: Winger Ronald Petrovicky, who has been on a conditioning assignment with the Penguins' minor-league team in Wilkes-Barre, is supposed to return to Pittsburgh today after making a final appearance with the Baby Penguins last night. Forward Ryan Malone, out since Oct. 21 with a broken left forearm, hopes to have his cast removed Monday. Malone still must rehabilitate his wrist and regain his strength, so he isn't expected to resume playing until at least the first week in December. - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

San Jose Sharks: The Sharks recalled goalie Thomas Greiss from Fresno of the ECHL as a precaution because Evgeni Nabokov is nursing a sore hand. - San Jose Mercury News

Tampa Bay Lightning: An MRI Thursday revealed that Lightning captain Tim Taylor sustained a cervical spine contusion on a hit during Wednesday's game against Montreal. He will miss tonight's game and will be day-to-day after that. - Tampa Tribune

Washington Capitals: Zednik's status could change before tonight's game against the Hurricanes. Both Zednik and Coach Glen Hanlon hope he'll return to the lineup after missing six consecutive contests. Zednik, who appeared to be fully recovered yesterday as he unleashed a handful of hard slap shots, said he "probably" will return tonight. Right wing Chris Clark is questionable for tonight's game after being hit in the mouth with a stick in the third period Wednesday. . . . Centre Dainius Zubrus, who left in the third period against Boston with an undisclosed injury, is probable. - Washington Post
