Todd Fedoruk: An old face returns

Todd Fedoruk might be the only player in the NHL whose face is largely man-made.

That's because the most recent former Flyer to return has titanium plates for cheekbones on both sides of his face, after his latest surgery to repair a broken right cheekbone and orbital injury following a fight last month with Minnesota's Derek Boogaard.

"At least my face doesn't set off the alarms at the airport," Fedoruk deadpanned. "This was a significant break, worse than the last one [in 2005]. But I'm still capable of doing my job."

Shouldn't the title be "A new face returns"?

I can't decide if I should or about the man-made comment.

And, is it just me or does Fridge seem a little jilted? He keeps making comments that I would term borderline: "I'm telling myself that was one of the reasons."

OTOH, the honesty is a bit refreshing I suppose.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said that recently acquired Todd Fedoruk, suffering from a bone injury near his eye, could be ready to play by the end of the month.

Fridge on ice

It also didn't take long to assume his role as a locker-room entertainer. He was able to get some laughs out of Peter Forsberg yesterday when he had an X-ray of his face brought into the locker room.

It looked like the T-shirt of some twisted heavy-metal rock band and showed the many tiny plates that now hold his right and left cheek and orbital bones together, and the pins that anchor his three replacement front teeth.

"Nice smile," Forsberg remarked, to which Fedoruk replied, "I'm taking that with me to my next contract negotiation. There's no way a guy should make less than the cost of the metal in his face."

He'll wear a full cage to protect his face, but anyone who has watched him play won't take long to recognize Todd Fedoruk on the ice.

Watch for the guy crashing his body into guys wearing Devils jerseys tonight at the Wachovia Center when New Jersey comes to town. That will be Fedoruk.

The Flyers had a great start, too. It took Todd Fedoruk just one shift - his first of the season as a Flyer - to do something Kyle Calder hasn't done in 24 games.

Score a goal.

"The Fridge," who told people he was very nervous about his return to Philly, played with ample energy, threw his weight around and provided some offensive spark.

He had a two-point game.

"That goal was a big ice-breaker," Fedoruk said. "Few and far between for a guy like me to put the puck in the net. It was a textbook start for what I wanted to happen."

Perhaps the biggest reason the Flyers brought Todd Fedoruk back to the team was because they were looking for a vocal leader.

Case in point was yesterday’s practice.

When he came into the locker room after practice, he started screaming at Ryan Potulny and Stefan Ruzicka to go back out to the ice and "bring in the pucks. I mean it! I’m serious!’’

There was an awkward moment, but Potulny eventually got up and went out to the ice. He came back and someone had already gathered the pucks.

Ruzicka didn’t go and got an earful from Fedoruk.

"I’m old school," Fedoruk explained later. "Where I come from, rookies don’t leave the ice until the last veteran comes off. These guys have to learn respect.’’

Then, in the summer of 2005, Fedoruk was traded to Anaheim, asked to take his game to a new town and win over a new set of fans. He did just that, compiling 23 points, a plus-6 rating and 176 penalty minutes as a prototypical power forward.

CTN: Did you think that Anaheim thought that maybe you wouldn't be able to play the game the same way when you came back from the injury and that was what was behind the trade?

TF: No, no. I don't think that had anything to do with it. Bones heal as strong, if not stronger, than before. It's not going to change the way I play. All it did was take some time for when I was able to do the job. It may take another couple of months before I can get back into every part of my game.

I watched the Fridge play against the Hurricanes in Raleigh a few days ago. He was just about the same ol' Fridge - hitting the opposition, driving hard to the net, and he even got a couple assists in the Flyers' win against the 'Canes. That guy makes me proud.

He hasn't been the same since the fight against Boogaard. It's a shame, I considered Fedoruk a top 10 heavyweight last season, but this year he's gotten pounded several times. Hope he can regain his form.

I was at the game...he went down hard. But, the fight seemed rather uneventful at first. I think Orr just caught him right with that punch and he went down.

Looks like he'll be okay though. Here's to a speedy recovery!
