Did AO just do it to do it, or did Briere hit AO cheap first or something?

No matter what, that's a bad thing to happen, but I'm just wondering what triggered it?

Ovechkin asked Briere to vote for Rory Fitzpatrick for the All-Star game. Briere said: "That's a joke right?" Ovechkin cheap shot him wink.gif

The only reason that was bad is because of where Briere ran into.

Ovechkin didn't hit him very hard at all.

It doesnt matter how hard he hit him....point is it was cheap and wayyy after the play. Briere had gotten rid of the puck five seconds before and was just looking for a line change. AO has just lost my liking of him. Cheap Cheap Cheap.

For sure that will be a suspension....that was a brutal hit regardless of how he was hit....You have to have control of your body and OA was completely out of line...... What makes it worse is the fact that Briere was going for a line change...If that had to been a foot or two earlier, Briere would have been decapitated because the door was open to the bench.

I would be very surprised that this doesn't get a min. 5 games

That looks really bad. My first thought was thank goodness his head didn't go through the open door. It could have been a whole lot worse, but that does not excuse AO for the cheap shot. It will be interesting to see if AO gets the suspension for it.

I hope he gets a suspension for this. A big one. I don't really care if he meant to hit him that badly or not. He needs to learn that even though he's one of the league's best players he can't get away with doing something like that.

I live in DC and went to this game, and I happened to be looking at my beer when the hit happened. All I saw was Briere sprawled on the ice like he wasn't alive and half the Sabres gunning for Ovechkin, and since arenas never replay things like that, this is the first I've gotten to see it. Pretty mean stuff, very out of character for Ovechkin. As to what caused it, nothing that I saw, if anything the Sabres should have been the ones who were pissed considering the ass-kicking the Caps were administering. More than a couple Sabres fans went ballistic and were ejected, believe you me.

Ovechkin still got the #2 star of the game, and there was a "Hit of the Game" on the jumbotron, but they didn't dare put this one up there.

Ovechkin had a bad hit, but that's not a big deal. Sometimes people make wrong decisions on the ice, the guy knows that he is wrong, and that's an important thing. If you are playing the game you probably know how hard it is to control space on the ice and see everything. He is not a cheap player. You all saw how he hits, and he is ready to go against ANYBODY in this league, so it is not like he is choosing the smallest defenseless guys to attack. Any player that makes a lot of hits will make some mistakes sometimes. I personally don't see any problem, I like the fact that Ovechkin is sorry. I think he should be suspended though. If any of you saying that they don't like Ovechkin after today's game, I think you can't differentiate between talent and ordinary.

IDK, I don't think AO knew he was facing the boards, and he barely hit him. It doesn't seem that it was intentional, though it was still a nasty hit. Briere is ok, which is good. I love that little guy. IDK what I think should happen.

Cheap shot by a guy who really shouldn't be pulling tricks like that when the guy has his back turned and when his team has a lead like they did. Especially if it's going to turn him into a huge target for the rest of the game and every other time they play Buffalo this year. He's too valuable to his team.

As far as the respect thing goes, I agree with the thread description. I lost respect for Ovechkin also.

EDIT:

I don't ignore the fact that he could be the most talented forward in the NHL, and I haven't heard about any regrets or apologies yet before making this post. If he truly is sorry then I don't lose as much respect, but I still lose some.

How much respect would you have lost if it was Teemu on Briere?

I agree with the point you're making Aeryn. I don't lose respect for AO on this. EVERYONE makes mistakes. We're humans.

Yes, even AO is human wink.gif

Be careful...ask BritDuck what agreeing with Aeryn gets ya! laugh.gif

If it was Avery or Ruutu on Briere, yeah, I'd say intent was there regardless of how long Briere was down or whether or not he returned to the game. Ovie may push the envelope, but he usually stays in the vicinity of the envelope as well.

It's a dynamic game, it's going to hit the fan once in a while.
Two that come to mind:
Army - Letowski
Vandermeer - Flinn

Oh yeah. Be careful about that. You might want to adopt my policy of disagreeing with everything Aeryn says. It is much safer! laugh.gif

No suspension expected for Ovechkin

I wonder what the NHL would have done had this been a hit on Ovechkin or Crosby dry.gif

DANG! I was hoping he'd be out for the game we play against them! A pity he got off with only a $100 fine, but what he did wasn't as vicious as it seemed. I didn't think it was intended, so maybe thats why there was no suspension. I still think he should have received at least a one game suspension, just to get the point across not to do it again.

And what's so bad about agreeing with Aeryn?

You know, after seeing the hit a few more times, I don't think there was any malice in it. Ovie just kinda bumped him and and skated away, didn't seem like expected Briere to be off balance and to stumble into the boards. If it had happened anywhere other than at that exact spot, like two feet closer to or farther from the boards, it would have been no big deal.
