Only if we possible get ahead of ourselves. I think perhaps we should wait a bit and make sure it holds at this rate before raising the cap.

Yes. Some players are grossly overpaid, and the teams that are suffering from being at the cap right now and unable to trade for improvements deserve that suffering for signing those players for too much. An increased cap just means that the top players will get even more money, and the new and journeymen players will get the scraps. In many NHL cities, ticket prices are outrageous.

Funny, I read this right after the reversible Ducks hat thread, where people were complaining they ran small.

A bigger cap has pros and cons - the main problem is if it gets lowered and teams are struggling to go back under. It is always easy to increase, but harder to reverse. On the other hand, it does give some breathing room and the ability to make some tweaks.

We may need the extra space if JSG continues to play this way... wink.gif

Salaries have risen to the point that the average player earns after the lockout roughly what he earned before the lockout. And next year, salaries will go up even more — to 56% of the revenues rather than the 54% that is the case today.

Bettman says that this occurs because revenues are increasing — and he's right.

But where have those increases come from? Mostly the fans, for whom this whole exercise was allegedly undertaken. All over the league, ticket costs have been jacked up. At the same time, teams have come up with new and intriguing ways to separate the fans from their money — seat licenses, VIP seats, a surcharge for those who walk to the arena rather than pay parking fees, and so on.

The other significant increase comes from an area which had absolutely nothing to do with Bettman's machinations. The Canadian dollar has skyrocketed in relation to the U.S. dollar, and since all six Canadians teams sell out consistently, their U.S.-dollar revenues have increased accordingly, thereby increasing the league-wide revenues that Bettman brags about.

The author is exaggerating, right?? How can they charge people for walking to the arena? blink.gif

I do not know.
However, if he gets too cute with his revenue streams I'm sure there are more than a few fans that will tell him where he can shove it. dry.gif

He's kidding right?
I mean he can't possibly be serious, can he?

I guess he probably could be, I mean why not drive away more fans by charging them to save the planet! Very Bettmanesque.

I'm not a fan of Bettman, but the article clearly says "teams" have come up with these new ways to grab your dough. I stopped liking the new NHL when they added an arena surcharge for Ducks games. I prefer they just add on to the price of the seat rather than create these cute little ways to raise the price of admission. I just knew no arena could possibly stand by their big words at the end of the lockout about keeping the prices down for two seasons.
