Basically, the Maple Leafs are spending money just like they always have. They are going to be about $25 million over the proposed $31 million cap, which means that they don't believe for a second that a cap will actually be put into place. Since they are the most influential team in the NHL, they probably know what they are doing.
Interesting read, that's for sure.

They know one thing (Barmy cover your eyes for a second): they won't win the Cup anytime soon!!! 
On a serious note, all we can do is speculate and read between the lines. Will there be a cap, or not. A season or not. We need to sit back, relax, have afew brews, go to the movies, enjoy the summer, whatever and hope for the best. I'm sure that all parties concerned know that if there's no season (or even a prolonged delay -- into December, let's say) the league will drop in popularity behind hopscotch and horseshoes.

Hopscotch and horseshoes, I like that. 
Yes, I think all will be okay, but we will have to just chill til then. Silly me freaks out over things, then they are nevere as bad as they seemed to be in the dark of night.
