All these years later, folks in college hockey circles still debate the idea. The NCAA definitely turned heads (and spurred airline reservations) a decade ago when it announced that the 1999 Frozen Four would be played in Anaheim, CA.
The tournament went off without a hitch, despite unseasonably cold weather and three of the four teams having to travel 3,000 miles from their New England home bases. Pessimists pointed to the thousands of empty seats inside the home of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks for the title game (Maine beat New Hampshire in overtime for the crown), while optimists noted that 15,000 fans paying to watch college hockey in Southern California was great for the game.

I have great memories of the Frozen Four at the Pond. And the NHL team scouts were all there in force.
