DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Avalanche want to keep Peter Forsberg around.
Forsberg's agent, Don Baizley, told the Rocky Mountain News the star forward has received a qualifying offer from the Avalanche to retain his rights and prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Forsberg made $11 million US last season.
Forsberg still will become a restricted free agent next week and could sign an offer sheet from another NHL team. But the Avalanche would have the right to match the offer.
Without a new agreement, the NHL is expected to lock out the players and put the 2004-05 season in limbo. That possibility is believed to be one reason Forsberg might decide to play for MoDo in his hometown of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, next season. His father, Kent, will coach the team.
The Avalanche would retain his NHL rights even if Forsberg returns home.
Avalanche forwards Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne are expected to become unrestricted free agents July 1. Both have Baizley as an agent.
``(Selanne) is back in Finland, and I really don't know what his plans are for next year,'' Baizley said.
Baizley said it is possible Kariya could return to Colorado.

Well, he may not, but this way, the Avs cover their bet. By qualifying Forsberg, another team can't get ahold of his rights. If he doesn't play next season, due to HIS choosing or an NHL lockout, well, they still have first dibs on him. Yikes, 11 mil is still a lot to throw on the table in case there is a sal-cap.

It doesn't surprise me that Colorado wants to hold onto Forsberg but Kariya possibly re-signing is a shock but I guess with injury issues last season he wants to give himself another go with the Avs to see if he really can get that Cup...the answer again will be a RESOUNDING NO!!!

No is the simple answer. The long answer is if a team can afford it, and make a profit, well, yes, sort of. It's funny because money makes the world go around, and sports IS entertainment.

Forsberg's good but he's not 11 mil good. I don't think anyone is! Here in the UK footballers get about 2-3 mil if that to play so it's stupid to pay these guy's so much.
Also I will be very shocked if Kariya resigns with the Avs, as he sucked ass :td: and you know he can't leave Teemu,

Thats about 4-6 million USD though. And you call so get payed a hell of a lot more if you got to Chealse (aLondon football club, they have Russian a oil tycoon as an owner, so he is spending about $100,000,000 to get some players off other teams. Only good players though. He's trying to buy the trophys, so far he's failed...)

Why wouldn't Paul & Teemu sign cheap with the Bruins? After all, gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts.
As for Forsberg, I really think he'll play for his dad's team in Sweden (MoDo) next year. Tommy Salo has already signed as their goalie, and I don't see any reason for Forsberg to come back to the NHL. He's rich, he's won every trophy he can, and he's still healthy. Leave while you're on top.
