Rumours, meanwhile, have resurfaced regarding the future of Hurricanes winger Jeff O'Neill, but Rutherford said he's got a more pressing issue.
``At this point if we're inclined to do anything with roster players it would probably be in goal,'' said Rutherford. ``We think highly of Cam Ward (2002 first-round pick) and some of our people think he could start next season as our backup goalie.
``And of course we just acquired Martin Gerber (from Anaheim) to go along with Kevin Weekes. So you never know, something could happen there.''
Weekes, who posted a solid 2.33 GAA on the struggling Hurricanes last season, will be a restricted free agent July 1 and the Hurricanes must qualify the 29-year-old at $2.35 million US by midnight on June 30 in order to retain his rights.
