Quintal has been in the game since 89'..hes a good Dman but he was getting old,the canadians wanted to get rid of him this year and that's what they did.

He's gonna be a UFA, so I bet it's just one of those deals where the Kings won't sign him and will take the draft pick they get for losing him to free agency. There's no point in acquiring a potential UFA otherwise. If they wanted him, they could just wait another week and sign him.

Sort of like when the Rags traded Leetch to Vancouver or Edmonton or someone like that a few years ago a couple weeks before they re-signed him.

Doesn't Quintal get injured often? That's a perfect match for LA, then! :tu: wink.gif

If he stays healthy he will be a good mentor for some of the Kings younger D-men.

I think SG1577 is right on the money with this one. The Kings can't be interested in signing this guy, otherwise just wait until Thursday and sign him then since he's going to be a UFA. This reeks of a trade that was made so that the Kings can get the compensation pick when Quintal signs elsewhere.

It's a good deal for the Kings, so he can be injured 1/2 of the season.

Well according to this article, click here, the Kings got permission to negotiate with Quintal for free. It cost them nothing and it also says that they will sign him in the next couple days for a lot less then the 1.5million he made last year.

Just ask yourself, Deuce, if you were Quintal...why would you sign with the Kings before you became a UFA? Free agency begins on Thursday, why sign a contract now before seeing what other teams will offer you? Especially since, according to the article you linked, the Kings are offering "significantly less than the $1.5 million he made last year." It's not like you can't accept the Kings offer of a significant paycut next week.

Also, this is a very curious move by the Kings if they do sign him. He's 35, (he turns 36 in October) and if there is indeed a lockout and the season is lost, he'll be 37 at the start of the 2005-2006 season. Is a 37-year old defenseman really what the Kings need? If so, Fredrik Olausson is available.

Finally, the rights to Quintal cost the Kings nothing, but if they do sign him it will cost them a draft pick. That's the "conditional" part of the trade.

"The (Kings) acquired veteran Montreal defenseman Stephane Quintal on Sunday for a conditional pick."

Im not saying anything either way. All I know is that the link says that the Kings are trying to sign him in the next couple days. As far as him being old, I dont really know what to think because Im not familiar with the guy. Chelios is still a decent D-man and there are others. Im not saying he is as good as any they are but old guys can still play. Especially slow tough d-man, and from what I hear thats what he is. A guy willing to drop'em if neccessary. Basically a better defensive version of Brad Norton, but not as good a fighter. Well see.

Well, he's definitely better than Brad Norton, but that's not saying much.

I would be very surprised if he signed with the Kings before Thursday. Very suprised. That article can say whatever it wants, logic says otherwise. Also, I have yet to hear from Quintal on this and if he intended on signing with the Kings, you'd think he'd say so.

Time will tell, but my money is on Quintal signing elsewhere as a free agent and the Kings getting the compensation pick.

I agree with everything you said, especially the Brad Norton part, all I was pointing out is that the Kings want this guy enough to ask the Habs for a few extra days to talk to him. Well see what happens.

Well, Quintal signs with the Kings before he becomes a FA. Very interesting. I guess the press does know more then any of us sometimes.
