Ryan Lasch grew up in Lake Forest and graduated from Trabuco Hills High, but his hockey dreams sent him to Canada and then Minnesota, where he is a freshman at St. Cloud State, the fourth-ranked team in the country.

It can be a long, twisting trip, becoming a hockey star when your first steps are toward the beach. Yet, there's Lasch today, a freshman sensation at St. Cloud (Minn.) State, having traveled from Lake Forest to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, most of which, this time of year, are frozen over.

Believe it, the Ducks aren't the only ice hockey story in balmy Orange County this winter.
