The questions this story raises!
Like: Why he isn't staying with the Avs. Does he think that they are on the way down? Does he think he is going to get more money somewhere else? Or did he not like living in Colorado? hmm.gif

Thoughts anyone?

From the Toronto Sun newspaper:

Kariya free to decide his fate

AL STRACHAN TELLS HOW SPEEDY WINGER WILL PICK HIS NEW TEAM ... AND IT MIGHT BE THE MAPLE LEAFS
By AL STRACHAN

ON THURSDAY, the floodgates open. All across the National Hockey League, players who were not given qualifying offers will join the already swollen ranks of the free agents.

Thursday is July 1, the day that NHL contracts traditionally expire, and at that point, as the league prepares for the Sept. 16 lockout, no team will be committed to more than 15 players.

That's the high end. Most rosters are much less crowded. The Boston Bruins, for example, will have four players under contract. The Washington Capitals will have five.

As a result, there were some whispers on the NHL draft floor here in Raleigh yesterday concerning the future home of some of these free agents.

One of the more intriguing stories had to do with the Maple Leafs having an interest in Paul Kariya.

It must be stressed that this is not presented as fact. There can be no confirmation of the Leafs' purported intentions because to do so would be to admit tampering.

Commissioner Gary Bettman takes a dim view of such activities. As one insider said, "He has let it be known that he'd love to catch just one, because if he ever catches one, the penalty will be so severe that there will never be another."

But if the Leafs are indeed interested in Kariya, they have chosen wisely.

He played for the Colorado Avalanche last season for $1.2 million US, and recently was given a $1.32 million qualifying offer for next season.

But he won't accept it. The reason he took a cut from the $10 million salary he earned in Anaheim was to make sure he would qualify for Group 5 free agency (a 10-year veteran earning less than the league average). Having gone to such lengths, he's not going to reverse direction now.

Kariya wants to chart his own future and he was willing to pay for that privilege.

Now, it's up to the Leafs to convince him that Toronto is the place to play. If they can do so, the salary isn't likely to be a problem.

Kariya has made something like $60 million during his career and he is what might charitably be called careful with his money.

When he decides on his next team, the determination will be based on quality of life, not salary.

He was bitterly disappointed with the one-season Colorado experience, not because of the way he was treated, but because of the way it unfolded.

Not only was he himself injured for much of the year, so were many of the key Avalanche players. His close friend Teemu Selanne didn't play up to expectations. And worst of all, the team that he thought would win a Stanley Cup couldn't get past the second round of the playoffs.

To this day, he thinks that the Avs would have proved themselves to be the best team in hockey had they been able to avoid injuries.

Then, as if the season had not been bad enough already, he suffered another blow when he wasn't selected for Team Canada.

Kariya is a proud, driven man, one of the hardest-working, best-conditioned athletes in the game. He would love nothing better than to prove that he can recapture the star status that once was his, but which has eluded him in recent years.

And, like so many players who have never had the privilege of doing so, he wants to win a Stanley Cup.

If the Leafs could convince him that he could win that Cup and play in a hockey hotbed at the same time, there's no reason to think he wouldn't jump at the offer.

It's not a matter of money. It's a matter of confidence. If the Leafs can get Kariya to believe in them, he'll be theirs.

 Oooh, I'm a twitter.....sooooo, he will be giving the Avs the finger next, eh? He wants to "chart his own future", eh? Well.....he's batting a thousand so far!!
What? No mention of Teemu?? They no longer are the "dynamic duo"?????
The Leafs??? Like when was the last time THEY got the cup???

I fear the little one got more of a concussion than we suspect....well, that would explain his rather bizarre behavior!! :uh:

Just imagine the rude awakening in Toronto if he fails to preform to the high expectations of the fans there...could Paul handle all the hostility if he isn't quite up to snuff????? no.gif

And the beat goes on, and the beat goes on......................... :rl:

With no loyalty, I really don't see this guy winning the Cup any time soon, unless by pure gambling luck. I mean.. look at Ray Bourque. Loyal, stuck it out, and was finally rewarded. That's just bad karma building up there for Kariya. :td:

As my son would say - STINGY! Or as I would say - FRUGAL!

Who knows where he'll end up? Let's figure that there are 30 possible options out there, although a few can be ruled out automatically.

If it's not about the money, and it's all about things like "quality of life" and a chance to win the Cup, why doesn't he re-sign with the Avs? According to him, they had a championship caliber team...

Let's see, he's how old? I guess he can jump from one team to another until he retires looking for his name on the cup at some point. As long as he doesn't revisit the Ducks he can do whatever he wishes in my book. I will never forget those words he said at the rally, but certainly won't lose sleep over it either.

Echoing SG1577's sentiments....

"To this day, he thinks that the Avs would have proved themselves to be the best team in hockey had they been able to avoid injuries. "

If that was the case, he would without hesitation resign to the Avs. But he isn't. So, he robs Disney of their money for all those $10-million seasons, comes 40 minutes away from a Cup, then backstabs his team-mates, the organization, the fans, and hightails it to Colorado with Teemu. The Avs fall apart, now he is out of Dodge again? If he gonna keep flopping to teams season after season, until he finds one that wins the Cup? And as [rviously stated, where IS Teemu? These two broken up? Awwwwwwww, Paulina is thru with Teemu now. Boohoo......Here's karma for ya, Paul:

Here's hoping that if there Is a next season, that unless Anaheim wins the Cup, I hope the Avs win it in '05. Wouldnt that be funny, little Paulina? Then, I hope you hightail it out of Toronto, then go to Dallas, only to see the Leafs win it in '06.

If there's one guy I hope never touches the Stanley Cup, it's Paul Kariya. He doesn't deserve it with the way he treats fans and franchises. He lied to us, used the Avalanche and now he's off to manipulate his third franchise in just over a year. What a bag for feminine hygiene products, if you know what I mean.

I hope he signs with an Eastern Conference team, and one that will not win the Cup. I can tell you he won't be going to Ottawa, though I would love to hear what Bryan Murray has to say to him if he did. Toronto would chew him up and spit him out. The media there would crucify him for not living up to expectations, and he wouldn't be able to take it. He was coddled by the Orange County media and wouldn't know how to respond to four articles a day calling him a piece of crap.

With the new CBA looming, a potential lockout, and teams looking to cut payroll, it will be interesting to see how the free agent market plays out, not just for Karyia but for all of the free agents. How much will some of these guys get and which teams will be shopping for them.

Interesting times ahead.

Kariya didn't sign the qualifier because he'll do better on the open market.

He's a free agent again. Let him sign here. Most of the ducks fans out there would like to see him back, i.e. the ones that go to the games to see a game, the ones that have seen his face there for years, the ones that like Kariya. Hell, he's the reason why people are Ducks fans, like me. He the main reason I picked this team. He could do this again.

It's a bit like that guy that plays/played with LA he's been there three different times after going to win a cup. Kariya tried to do it again. He knows it was a lucky run two years ago. He knows he didn't have a huge chance winning one here. So he tried elsewhere. He failed. Let him come back. He will have a chance here. We've got people that can help him again. This team was build around him for so many years, he was Anaheim.

None of you can say with all honestly that he doesn't have skill enough to play. You say his words are what make him bad. But has anyone asked him what he has to say on this matter? Do any of you people know what he wants to do? If he wants in, let him. Unlike many he could want to player here again. All of you say that people are here for the money. Kariya won't be, he'll be here because he wants too.

He can sign wherever he wants except with the Ducks. Preferably an Eastern Conf team as SC suggests. I'd like to see him sign in Toronto or Philly where the media is so... kind and understanding. wink.gif If he signs with the Ducks I'd send him to rot in Cincy.

And duckingermany the sisters were on the same line with Sakic and what came from that? ZIP.

I agree with PJ; the TO media always think everyone is coming to their town. Let him go; he won't survive.

I don't care where he goes. IF the Ducks decided to take him back (which I seriouslt doubt will happen) I'd give him a chance because he is a very skilled player. What I don't understand is all these people drooling over the thought of him and Selanne coming back together. Did you people pay attention this last season??? Teemu is done and I definitely do NOT want him here; that would be a serious waste of money.
