It is not yet official and probably won't be for another week or two, but it looks like Steve Yzerman will be the general manager of Team Canada at the 2007 World Championship in Russia.

Yzerman is said to be very excited to try his hand at managing in a hands-on role and Hockey Canada likes the idea of bringing another Canadian hockey icon into its fold, just as it did when it named Wayne Gretzky the executive director of the 2002 Olympic team.

Gretzky is desperately hoping not to be involved in any way with the World Championship team because as head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, he wants to be in the Stanley Cup playoffs. But it has been suggested that if Phoenix is not a playoff team, Yzerman might toy with the idea of asking Gretzky to coach the World Championship entry.

Interesting development of things. HGretzky as HC of Team Canada sounds goooood. I believe gus would play with motivation for him and there would be more guys willing to come than in "normal" cases, I believe.

But too early to speculate on Worlds rosters yet!

Bob McKenzie's has another blurb on Stevie Y and Team Canada

Now that Steve Yzerman is officially in the fold as GM of Canada's entry in the 2007 World Championship, there will be all sorts of speculation on whether he could also head up the Canadian Olympic team in 2010.

...

if this venture goes well, it's not unreasonable to think he could be involved with the management group in 2010, but there are just too many variables on that front to say anything for sure.

The fact is the next three World Championships will be used by Hockey Canada to evaluate players, coaches and management candidates for the Olympics.

As Steve Yzerman grabs the reins of Team Canada for this spring's IIHF world hockey championship, he might very well be starting down a path that sees him play a role in selecting the country's 2010 Olympic team.

He's just not looking that far ahead yet.
