A $500 million multi-purpose arena proposal may be a stepping stone to a NHL franchise in the Seattle area.

According to The Seattle Times, the Sonics have hired an independent research firm to determine if the Puget Sound market could support a National Hockey League franchise, principal owner Clay Bennett said Wednesday.

While true expansion is not really an option, the Seattle group hinted at a clause in the Nashville Predators ownership deal that would allow them to relocate if attendance numbers sagged to a certain point. The recent talk of the Penguins moving to Kansas City is also of interest to the Seattle group.

You'll find me mainly at the Royal Executions and other outdoor events in the Anaheim area, never farther south... I don't drive, LOL.

The Thunderbirds aren't enough apparently.... The way I see it is: If Key Arena is gone, then theres a chance there could be an NHL team there... But with 30 teams already, theres no point.

A lot of groups have looked into having an NHL team in Seattle...it just won't happen. There really isn't enough interest in hockey here, not with the major league baseball, football and basketball teams around. That's why the Thunderbirds are moving to Kent...well there really are a lot of reasons for that...but that's a big one. There are pockets of hockey lovers, but any team would be hard pressed to find 18,000 of them consistantly. I'm also surprised that the Sonics are looking into another anchor tenant for thier new facility in Renton, I thought they were supposed to be all that!?! rolleyes.gif
