Good 'rental'? NHL needs to toss this conflict of interest

Blues center Doug Weight is a nice fellow who has made a lot of friends in his long career, and the least the NHL can do to reward him is to someday name a rule after him.

The Doug Weight Rule.

And that rule would be: If you're traded during the calendar year when your contract is expiring and you could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, there is one restriction on unrestricted free agency. You can't re-sign with the team that traded you.

I personally dont have that much of a problem with the situation
but I can see where the guy is coming from and understand his point
but i could see where I might also have a gripe about it

It seems like a great idea for me. The inferior team get the picks and prospects while the playoff team get the player they want and a better shot at the cup. Look at Mark Recchi and Doug Weight last year they each won the cup and returned to their former team. It feels like a win-win situation. The top teams are looking to win the cup now while the bottom feeders are looking a couple years away.

It would never go through though, because that would limit a lot of players choices as UFA's, taking away the 'UNrestricted' part and a lot of the players don't have a choice in the matter of whether they were traded or not
