Cincinnati, OH (CP) - Star winger Paul Kariya of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche has been cleared to play for Cincinnati in any future AHL or AHL championships.
The American Hockey League executive committee made the decision Thursday after a request from the Naional Hockey League to make the Canadian-born Kariya eligible to play for Cincinatti in AHL competitions.
This decision means Kariya is eligible to represent Cincinnati in any 2005 hockey games for the AHL.
Even without the AHL decision, Kariya would have been eligible to play for Canada in the upcoming 2004 World Cup of Hockey, which is a NHL-NHLPA governed tournament where AHL eligibility rules don't apply. However, officials for the World Cup just laughed.
Kariya, 29, was born in Vancouver, in the Canadian Province of British Columbia.
Kariya became, due to a brain fart out of his control, a border-line nut case after being signed to the Colorado Avalance after having been the spiritual leader of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for 9 seasons, and soon became the big joke of the Avalanche during their not-so-good 2003-2004 season.
``We took on a flexible attitude towards the request of the player and the NHL to switch the player's national eligibility,'' the AHL office secretary said in a statement. ``It became very clear that Mr. Kariya was a victim of circumstances which were totally out of his control because he was dellusional at the time and became unable to get either the money he wanted or the cup he desired and that it would be unfair to him not to approve the request as he remains a fairly good player and deserves a chance to prove his worth to Cincinnati.''

His own doesn't count either, he has no reason to wear one.
