Sportsnet.ca - According to the Calgary Herald, goaltender Roman Turek has restructured his current contract in an effort to stay in Calgary and help the teams bottom line at the same time.
Turek will apparently forgo the final two years of his deal that would have seen him paid $5 million next season and as much as $5.5 million the year after.
Instead Turek has a new three-year contract that will allegedly pay him between $1-2 million per season over the next three years. That is in line with his backup status behind Flames starter Miikka Kiprusoff. The contract will also allow for bonuses for appearances, wins and team accomplishments.
The restructuring could save the Flames $3-4 million (U.S.) next season. That will go a long way in re-signing the likes of Jarome Iginla, Kiprusoff, Chris Simon and Group 2 free agents Marcus Nilson and Ville Niemenen. It will also help make room to ink top prospect Dion Phaneuf.
Turek who is back in the Czech Republic on vacation was quoted as saying: "I want to win a Stanley Cup in Calgary. This will make it possible to do that and to remain in a city that my family and I love."
