“The biggest one who started everything was Patrick Roy,” said François Allaire, a goaltending guru who coached Roy for 10 years with the Montreal Canadiens and helped refine his style. “He was the big guy in Montreal for so many years, and all the games were on TV. The kids looking at him every night realized you could be the star as a goalie.”

Anaheim Ducks goalie Jean-Sébastien Giguère said: “When you’re a young goaltender in Quebec, he was the guy who you looked up to. When Patrick came to play in Montreal, young kids wanted to be like him.”
