Why??
How is that possible??
I didn't know that Messier was also a crybaby?!
How can he be the best leader in the league if he can't go to the toilet by him self??

Bret Hull, thís is terrible!!! mad.gif

Well you know what they say, if you can't get them into the cup final, try and swing a few postseason awards their way to try and make up for it.

The only leader award he should get is the first person who went to the locker rooms after his team lost to us!

Pathetic!

Yeah, the reward is a joke, I mean, it has some half-assed sponsor attatched to it that nobody has ever heard of, and they announced it in the first intermission on Versus, not a big deal. But the fact that Chelios is still considered a better leader than other players just because he's a dinosaur, doesn't make him a good fit.

Yeah I think you guys are right. I also thought it was one of those "thanks for working for our company for the last 50 years, here's a gold watch, now RETIRE!!!" lol_1.gif

Came across this at a site that had quoted some of my stuff on MVN:

http://melroserocks.blogspot.com/

Yes, the name is awful, but they had some good stuff about Chelios. My favorite other suggestions they came up with -

GM/Exec of the Year - presented by Mike Milbury and sponsored by Enron
Sportsman of the Year - presented by Sean Avery

Can't sum up Chelios' award any better than this guy has done!

Leader?

Humanitarian?

Those aren't the words I would use to describe Chris Chelios at all

I'll try and defend the decision and play devils advocate (don't worry, I'm just as disgusted). I would guess that this award, as are all of the others, is decided upon before the playoffs begin. And they were just waiting for him to be eliminated to announce him. So, his no hand shake act didn't go into consideration. And, you do have to give the guy props for playing at his age. But still, come one Mess, that dinosaur doesn't deserve the award. If he was still playing, I would say Yzerman, but since he is retired, I would probably go with Sakic, but thats just me.

It's things like this award going to Chelios that make me shake my old school head and wonder how society defines things such as leadership these days. That and all the attention the media gives young so called stars such as Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.

Say what?
QUOTE
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, who refused to participate in the on-ice handshake line after the Ducks ousted the Red Wings from the playoffs, this week was named recipient of the Mark Messier Leader of the Year Award for the 2006-07 season “in recognition for his outstanding performance as a player, his vast leadership skills and his dedicated humanitarian efforts,” according to a news release.

Classy leader.

Chelios cheats Father Time

IPB Image

QUOTE
Goodman tailors a sport-specific workout for the summer, but it's the circuit training -- a nonstop, 60-minute succession of exercises that Chelios swears by and others swear at. (The first time ex-teammate Mathieu Schneider tried it, he vomited.) Even in his mid-40s, Chelios still powers through it like "a machine," Goodman says, adding, "It's his competitiveness: That's the reason he's still willing to do the work that you have to do to sustain yourself."

Chelios doesn't take any water with him for the ride. "Water?" the Wings' 45-year-old defenseman asks, his lips curling into that familiar sneer. "Nah, that's not how we do it."
