Islanders re-sign forward Justin Papineau
July 19, 2004
UNIONDALE. N.Y. (AP) -- Free agent forward Justin Papineau re-signed with the New York Islanders on Monday.
Papineau had eight goals and five assists in 64 games last season, his first full campaign in the NHL. The 24-year-old center, who scored five goals on the power play, agreed to terms on a one-year contract.
``Justin showed signs this season of being the talented young goal scorer that we believe he can be,'' Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. ``Like most young, developing players, he lacked the consistency necessary to perform at a high level night in and night out. That's the job of the coaching staff to help him with that.''
Papineau was acquired at the 2003 trade deadline from St. Louis for goalie Chris Osgood.
