Patrik Stefan misses the Empty Net vs. Chris Phillips scoring the GW goal in Game 5

Question: Which of these two was the bigger screw up?

Degree of Difficulty: Chris Phillips was being pressured by Travis Moen, arguably one of the better defensive forwards in the NHL and was forced to play the puck near his own net. Patrik Stefan was skating alone towards an empty net. Edge Stefan, for failing to make the easiest shot in the world with no pressure at all.

Accountability of Others: Emery didn't have a very good idea of where the puck was, but Patrik Stefan's teammates still allowed the Oilers to come all the way back down the ice and score a desperation goal in under ten seconds. Edge Phillips, although Stefan's was bad it wasn't his fault that the Stars gave up that tying goal.

Justification: Phillips played well all season long and offsets his mistake by contributing to the Senators' playoff run. Patrik Stefan played in only 41 games this year and was underwhelming as his season ended in February. Edge Stefan, the only atheltes allowed to make mistakes are the ones who spend the rest of the careers making up for them in advance so that they aren't defined by that mistake.

Situation: Stefan's miscue was in the Regular Season albeit with an empty net, the Stars still held a one goal lead. Phillips's miscue was in the Playoffs, the Stanley Cup Finals, with his team down 3 games to 1, with his team trailing by a goal. Edge Phillips.

Ramifications: Chris Phillips killed all of his teams momentum in the biggest game of their season with what was eventually the game winner. Patrik Stefan and Dallas would still eventually win in overtime. Edge Phillips.

Chris Phillips "wins" in this poster's opinion 3-2. Congratulations!

Phillips was probably worse overall and I felt really bad for him, but Stefans just made me start cracking up.

This question's a tough one to answer. While Phillip's situation was far worse, Stefan's miss was just completely stupid. It was also funnier. laugh.gif

Well, the Stefan's ordeal is a no-biggie if I was the coach since the Stars still manage to win it in overtime. The Chris Phillips' one was just heart-breaking considering the fact that it WAS in the Stanley Cup Finals while your team's down 3 games to 1.

i think stating that Philips goal took away all his teams momentum is overstating things, just a tad...

the senators never had momentum in that game and had philips not scored it would have ended 5-2 instead of 6-2

never the less his is still the bigger solo screw up...

stephens was a team error

The Senators didn't lose 3-2. They lost 6-2.
