The captain of the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning will come back for another run provided he has a new contract and there's hockey to play.

Dave Andreychuk told the St. Petersburg Times in Friday's edition that he began working out two weeks after the team won the Cup and has decided to play another season. It will be the 23rd season for Andreychuk, who turns 41 in September.

"The easy thing to do would have been to go out on top," Andreychuk told the paper. "A lot of my friends and people around me expected me to do it. But I felt it was the easy way out.

"I had a lot of fun and enjoyed the year and stayed relatively healthy. I just don't see a reason to retire. The list is getting bigger but not enough to retire."

Andreychuk added he likely would retire if there is a long lockout. The league's collective bargaining agreement with the players expires on Sept. 15.

"I can see an end, sure," he told the Times. "There has to be an end sooner or later. But I had two weeks off and had a great time in Tampa, and I started working out right away. I wanted to get back at it."

Andreychuk, an unrestricted free agent, played last season on a one-year, $1.55-million US contract.

Andreychuk's 21 goals last season gave him 19 20-goal seasons, behind only Gordie Howe's 22 and Ron Francis' 20. He had a goal and 13 assists in 23 playoff games. The NHL veteran has scored 634 career goals (11th all-time), including 270 on the power play.

clap.gif I hope he plays for many more seasons. Andy IS slowing down as most do but even in his "old" age, he is a lot better than most of the kids.
Why shouldn't he continue playing as long as he is good???? :rl: :rl: :rl: :rl:

Andreychuk is a great player and a very respected player and if he feels he's still got the itch to scratch in the NHL then I welcome him to continue being a true ambassador to the NHL...Hope you keep playing big guy cause you have tons of heart. :tu: yes.gif yes.gif yes.gif towel.gif towel.gif towel.gif biggrin.gifx: :bbn: :jason:

Andreychuk has a desire to play at least this next season and that is a good thing...I don't think he'll push it for a long time but he has the desire to play and he is still a good role player...and his experience is nothing to laugh at...it's possible he will play longer than he should but he earned that so to speak...I like him in the NHL. He is what hockey is all about. So I don't mind if he stays a little longer than he should cause he is Class...but I do understand where you are coming from. yes.gif biggrin.gifx: :bbn: :jason:

I'm happy for him because he still has a lot to put in this sport, I think. wink.gif
