Dave Andreychuk told the St. Petersburg Times in Friday's edition that he began working out two weeks after the team won the Cup and has decided to play another season. It will be the 23rd season for Andreychuk, who turns 41 in September.
"The easy thing to do would have been to go out on top," Andreychuk told the paper. "A lot of my friends and people around me expected me to do it. But I felt it was the easy way out.
"I had a lot of fun and enjoyed the year and stayed relatively healthy. I just don't see a reason to retire. The list is getting bigger but not enough to retire."
Andreychuk added he likely would retire if there is a long lockout. The league's collective bargaining agreement with the players expires on Sept. 15.
"I can see an end, sure," he told the Times. "There has to be an end sooner or later. But I had two weeks off and had a great time in Tampa, and I started working out right away. I wanted to get back at it."
Andreychuk, an unrestricted free agent, played last season on a one-year, $1.55-million US contract.
Andreychuk's 21 goals last season gave him 19 20-goal seasons, behind only Gordie Howe's 22 and Ron Francis' 20. He had a goal and 13 assists in 23 playoff games. The NHL veteran has scored 634 career goals (11th all-time), including 270 on the power play.
