The 5th Annual Ducks Fantasy Camp at Anaheim Ice has come and gone.

Coach Newell Brown drilled the skaters and Brian Hayward worked the goalies. The Ducks players who came to assist and play in the scrimmages on various days were Chris and Sean Pronger, Todd Marchant, Bobby Ryan, George Parros, Ryan Getzlaf, Brian Salcido, Todd Bertuzzi, and Brad May. John Ahlers also participated on ice, and Steve Carroll did the play-by-play for the game. Brian Burke showed up to schmooze a little before the drills on one of the days, and watched a bit from the glass, but did not get on the ice this year. Al Coates was the white team's coach for the game.

I'll be posting some photos and comments from the week.

Bertuzzi's black team won the game 3-2 in spite of the white team getting the advantage of the scorekeeper stretching the last minute of the game into two or three hoping for a tie and shootout. The goalie was just outstanding and even though the white team had May, Salcido, and Brown out there and their goalie pulled for the extra skater, the black defense held off the swarming attack.

Salcido is just the nicest kid. He was at camp both Wednesday and Thursday. He's very excited for the season to start. He and Bobby Ryan were talking up a storm to each other on Wednesday.

Bertuzzi and May seemed to be enjoying themselves ... skating in on the goalies wearing evil grins, then trying to set up the campers for tap in goals, but the goalies were just very good this year.

With this many players already in town, you may be able to catch them skating at Anaheim Ice getting ready for camp.

hmm.gif There's got to be a reason DTP does his reports AFTER the camp is over (as opposed to during camp).

Thanks for the pics and report. thumbsup.gif

Everyone's quite welcome. Oh what a sacrifice I made in order to be in an ice cold rink at the start of a massive heat wave. wink.gif

He files after the fact because there are so few people attending that he is more easily identified in a crowd and heaven forbid that any human acknowledge his presence in the real world!

Thanks for the report. I'm stealing it for MVN. biggrin.gif At least I'm honest! I didn't have time to hunt you down and attend myself.

Hey now! I can't make it too easy to be identified! bag.gif

Is there enough material here for you MrsB? You're welcome to whatever you can use. I didn't take the excellent notes like you do during training camp and such. And since it's Fantasy Camp, the players and coaches go so much easier on the campers than they would on each other. Although I did notice that there wasn't as much goofing off or amusing competitiveness between the Ducks as there was last year. Getzlaf did get a good ribbing at Hutchinson though! Hutch was going over defensive strategy and how everyone must play defense. Then he popped a question, "What position does Getzlaf play?" All the campers zippered their lips not wanting to give a wrong answer, especially knowing that they were supposed to be learning about defense. Hutch seeing no answer was coming turned to Getzy and asked, "What position do you play?" Getzy wisely replied, "Wherever I'm needed." Hutch nodded and then teased Getzy about his answer to which Getzy then teased Hutch back about Hutch's own one-dimensional playing style. Hutch had no comeback and so dropped and gave 'em five pushups. laugh.gif

Even though from the photos you can tell who was there, here's the attendees on each day ...

Monday: Todd Marchant, Chris and Sean Pronger, Bobby Ryan
Tuesday: Brian Burke, Ryan Getzlaf, George Parros, Bobby Ryan
Wednesday: Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan, Brian Salcido
Thursday: Todd Bertuzzi, Brad May, Brian Salcido

Coaches: Newell Brown, Brian Hayward
Trainer: Beth Brewer
Equipment Mgr: Chris Kincaid
Game announcer: Steve Carroll (FYI: Brent Severyn has signed a contract for two more years so we'll have these two up in the booth for a while)

Others who showed to help and/or play:
John Ahlers, Al Coates, Kent French, Rick Hutchinson, Al Trottier

First Post!

I have been on the other board for some time now.....I have rarely ever even trolled here - oh well, my loss!

Anyway, I was lucky enough to participate in the camp, so I had to reg and post.

First of all, hats off to Art Trottier (and everyone else who participated) for again putting on a first class event!

Everyone was cool, but someone mentioned Salcido above, so here's my input. My wife walked across the locker room with our little boy to talk to a camper - camper looks up and it is actually Salcido, not the camper. So they talked for a while and my kid was ENTRANCED by Salcido - staring at him, talking to him, etc etc.

Salcido mentioned that he started skating when he was 2, (our Owen is 9 months) so I told them that as soon as he's walking, he's getting some skates. So, a while later, I sent my wife over to have him sign a few pucks. The first one he inscribed, "To Owen - A few more years!!!" Cute.

After the game, I was waiting for May to sign a few pucks for me as well, and Salcido was there - I thanked him again for the gesture, telling him about the kids nursery (you should see it, it is "ALLDUCKS") and that the puck would look really nice in there. He's all "hold on a second" and goes out the door. A few moments later he returns with a game-used stick and signed it "To Owen - Good luck little buddy!"

He said maybe it will look good on the wall with the others (I haven't hung it yet, but it is going up....) and that "gee, maybe it will be worth something someday!" I laughed and told him not to worry about that, but just to enjoy the ride and thanked him profusely.

Anyway, he didn't have to do that.

When we showed the stick to Grandma (a rabid Duck fan in her own right) later that night, she just about cried. Nice guy, very unassuming and modest. My wife thinks he's hot, as well (uh-oh).

Thought you all would enjoy that story!
