New York Rangers draft pick Montoya to stay at Michigan
July 26, 2004
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Goaltender Al Montoya, who was selected at No. 6 by the New York Rangers in this year's NHL draft, will remain at Michigan for his junior season.
Montoya, the first goalie picked June 26, made the decision after a month of consideration.
``I wasn't completely sure about becoming a professional, and I still have more things I want to accomplish at Michigan,'' Montoya said.
Montoya led Team USA to its first World Junior Championship in January, posting a 6-0 record and a .944 save percentage.

Montoya is too young. That is the problem these days. Teams forcing a young goalie to play, when it generally takes 5-7 years to develop his skills. There are a few exceptions, but very few. Patrick Roy, Marty Brodeur, Tommy Barasso were young, but most guys don't come into their own until the mid twenties. I really think that was the undoing of Brent Johnson in St. Louis. Others too, but off the top of my head, he comes to mind. Montoya will be ready in a few years. I DO agree with you, the Rangers need a goalie, but let's not ruin Montoyo's confidence. All of the Sharks goalies spent 4 years approx. in the minors developing their skills. When Nabokov was released to the NHL world, he won the rookie of the year. Kipper was in their farm system too, now he has come of age.

I haven't been able to confirm this in any articles yet, but does this mean the Rangers lose his rights or just that he won't be in their system next year?

Here's an article about Montoya SC.
I don't know what it means for the Rangers though. Don't teams have two years to sign players after an entry draft?
