Phoenix Coyotes defenceman Derek Morris signed his one-year qualifying offer on Tuesday. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Last season, the 25-year-old Morris played in 83 games with Phoenix and Colorado, collecting six goals and 26 assists for 32 points. His 83 games played were a career high and led the NHL (along with Calgarys Marcus Nilson). The Edmonton, Alberta, native reached the 30-point plateau for the fifth time in his last six seasons.
The Coyotes acquired Morris and Keith Ballard at the trade deadline from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Chis Gratton, Ossi Vaananen and a 2nd round draft choice in the 2005 Entry Draft on Mar. 9, 2004. Morris played in 14 games with the Coyotes following the trade and increased his average ice time from 20:53 per game with Colorado to 25:02 per game with Phoenix.
In his 7-year NHL career, Morris has collected 51 goals, 192 assists and 243 points, along with 502 PIM in 501 games split between Phoenix, Colorado and Calgary. He has also played in 7 playoff games, registering 0-3-3 and 6 PIM. His best offensive season came in 2002-03 with Colorado when he set career highs in goals (11), assists (37), points (48), power play goals (9) and plus-minus (+16) in 75 games. That year, Morris finished T-7th in scoring among NHL defensemen and led all NHL defensemen with 7 game winning goals

That's a huge loss for Colorado one of the important defeceman there, but a good sign by Phoenix, it already looks like that the Phoenix Coyotes are already pumped up to be cup contenders. What I think is that the 'yotes will probably be #1 in the Pacific division and the ducks #2.
