Jeremy Roenick says he was just fooling around when he told a Phoenix radio station earlier this week that he wanted out of Philadelphia.
"I love playing in Philly. I love playing for the fans in Philly," Roenick tells the Philadelphia Daily News.
"I have two years left on my contract. I've honoured every contract I've ever signed, and I plan to honour this one."
Roenick told XTRA Sports radio show host John Gambodoro on Monday that he'd like to "rip up" his contract with the Flyers and return to Phoenix, where he spent five seasons with the Coyotes. He even went so far as to suggest general manager Mike Barnett and managing partner Wayne Gretzky get in touch with him.
Roenick says he and Gambodoro are good friends and the two were just having fun.
As for the collective bargaining talks resuming in Toronto on Wednesday, Roenick says we shouldn't get our hopes up.
"From what I heard, there's nothing to be hopeful for," Roenick tells FOXSports.com.
"Our game is not in the position to go through something that could be as catastrophic as a lockout, as players or as owners. It's hard enough to get our fans into the building. If we have a lockout and just take the game away totally, it's going to be tough to recover from that. It's a tough situation for our league right now."
"Let's just say I would hope (next season) would start around January," added Roenick about a possible lockout. "That would be strictly a personal desire."
Roenick says he's considered playing in an outside league, similar to other NHL players who have signed to play in Europe this fall. However, he plans to monitor the situation for the first couple of months before deciding on his options.
This guy is like a used car saleman - you never know when he is telling the truth!!!!!

JR is a serial prankster, the kind of guy that was short-sheeting beds when he was still in diapers. I take most of what he says in the spirit of good clean fun that he generally intends.

QUOTE
Jeremy Roenick – “Live” and Uncensored
Interview on Philadelphia radio station WIP 610 AM, 8/4/04, approx 9:25 AM ET
Taped and transcribed. Here is the transcript:
Q – What’s the deal with you and this radio station in Phoenix
A – Well, you know, I love to stir the pot, you and everyone are so gullible . I was running a radio show with a good friend of mine, and we were talking, and he want’s me back here in Arizona. He didn’t want me to leave in the first place, he was saying I’m going to get you back here, so he goes on the “JR back to Phoenix” trip, so I’m going to play along. Do I want to play in Phoenix again? I would love to play in Phoenix again. I have 2 years left in my contract in Philly, I’ve always stuck by my contracts, and lived by them, and stayed true to my word, but we went on the radio and we had some fun. My buddy took it a little far, but, you know, a lot of things that I say are “shock value”.
Q – You were on Comcast SportsNet a couple of weeks ago, you were clearly not happy about losing Mark Recchi, and this coming after that, well people are leaping to the conclusion that he (JR) wants out.
A – You know what, I love playing at the Wachovia Center. I love having the Flyers uniform on, for me it’s what I was born to do, to play in front of people that know whats going on, people that can fire me up. The people at the Wachovia Center, it just like, that 20,000 seat arena, its exciting, its what I feel I was born to do.
I’m not going to feel that way in Phoenix, it might be 10,000. Is it nice here, is it great here, yea, there’s no question, it’s like will the palm trees still be here?
Q – You are great on TV’s the best dam sports show – you’ve got a future career –
A - I’ve had a lot of job offers this summer (TV & radio gigs). I’m waitin for these schmucks to get this deal done for the NHL.
Q – Who were you referring to “these schmucks”?
A – The NHL and NHLPA guys.
Q – You made it clear on Comcast SportsNet that you weren’t happy with whats going on, did the union get on you for that?
A – I could care less what those schmucks say to me. You see no progress going on and it’s August 4th and you see training camp supposed to open in a month, our game is going to take a beating here, there’s not been much movement here. It’s just amazing to me, when we’ve had a year and a half of time and the deal is becoming as dirty as it is, it’s just that the lack of progress is unbelievable.
Q –The main issue is, it seems to us, that the owners want a salary cap and the players don’t and neither side will budge.
A – I think that if that is the only issue, you have to talk about alternate ideas. If that is the one remaining thing from keeping everything from pushing forward, then everyone is a bigger bunch of donkeys than, you know, I’m even explaining. Do we need a salary cap, no I don’t think we need a salary cap, but I do think we need to shave things down, to bring salaries down to a comfortable level where both the players and the owners are going to benefit.
Who wouldn’t want to make $6 Million dollars a year, I can’t understand why you can’t have a high cap of how much a player can make per player. Let’s say it’s $6 Million, why can’t you have 7 people make $6 Million and filter down from there. You’d have a lot more leeway in who you can sign, other players, you’d have a high cap on some players and you’d have a low cap. We should take rookies and have a rookie salary no matter where your drafted, your first year in the league you make a certain salary, so –
Q – JR, would it really frustrate you at this stage of your career if part of your career is lost on a contract dispute (CBA dispute) ?
A – Oh, no question, especially the most affluent years of my career, no question it would be very frustrating. My years are running down in terms of winning a Cup, and if one of those is gone because people can’t make decisions on whether there needs to be a cap or not, when some teams, some players, are making money and some are not, then that would be a real downer.
Q – Are you telling the whole city of Philadelphia that you have no desire to leave, no interest in leaving, and the whole thing in Phoenix was just kidding around?
A – Yea, we were just playing, gosh everybody just relax. It’s funny, I open my mouth and I say one thing and it goes global within 24 minutes, it’s amazing to me, you know what, it’s not going to ------ , so, I don’t care what they say.
You know, I love Mr. Snider, I think he’s, he’s done great things for me, he’s given me a great opportunity, and the Flyers have given me a great opportunity, and I have 2 years left to try and win the Cup.
Q – We know what a sense of humor Bob Clarke has and we know he’s laughing.
A – You know, Clarkie, every time he opens the paper and he sees my name, or turns on the radio and hears my voice, he goes “Oh no, here we go again”.
Q – Your taking years off of his life –
A – Clarkie knows all about me, he knows what I’m all about, he knows I’m going to say stuff just to hear myself talk. And you know that’s what Clarkie does, he’s a great man and I have great respect for him. If Clarkie had a problem with me, he would call me and tell me to shut the “you know what” up ---
JR cut off, in mid-sentence, by host.
Q – Hey, JR thanks for coming on –
A – I’ll see you all when I get back to Philly.
JR hang-up.
Keith Jones – “Did you see what he said, there should be a salary cap, and that is what it is, there has to be. He’s a veteran player that makes a lot of money, if the deal is going to get done, it’s going to be up to the older players, like himself. And they are going to sell the younger players down the river, and that’s what their going to have to do.”
