MONTREAL (CP) - Right-winger Richard Zednik has signed a three-year, $7.3 million US contract with the Montreal Canadiens, GM Bob Gainey announced Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Slovakian earned $1.85 million last season, when he had 26 goals and 24 assists. His new deal calls for annual salaries of $2.3 million, $2.4 million and $2.6 million.

``I asked for a three-year-deal,'' Zednik said in a telephone interview from Banska Bystrika in Slovakia. ``I like Montreal. I like the city and I like the organization.''

Zednick said he ``didn't want to fight'' and is happy to have the deal so he can concentrate on next season.

Good sign and also this is a cheap deal, because 2.2 million is not that much for a 30 goal scorer.
