The Calgary Flames have signed unrestricted free agent forward Jason Wiemer.
Terms of the deal were not announced.Wiemer's salary last season was $1.62 million US.
Wiemer split last season between the New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild, scoring eight goals and 22 points in 75 games.
"Jason is a good signing for us as he fits the identity we have created for our hockey club in Calgary," said head coach and general manager Darryl Sutter.
"At 28 years old he is in the right age group of our building process. He is a Westerner who adds size and strength to our line-up while solidifying us at two forward positions."
The signing marks a return to Calgary for Wiemer, who spent just over three seasons with the Flames from 1997 to 2001.
"I'm thrilled to return to Calgary and the Flames organization," said Wiemer. "The way the team played during last season's playoffs and the way the city rallied around the club had a lot to do with my decision to come back. This is a great opportunity for me and I look forward to being a part of the team's future success."
The 28 year-old native of Kimberley, British Columbia was drafted in the first round, eighth overall, in the 1994 Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Good signing...will take some of the heat off of Simon in the toughness department. He's a big centerman which the Flames desperately need. Now if only he can score.......
