The son of former NHL goalie Patrick Roy apologized Monday for giving the finger to the crowd at a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game - but not for pounding on the rival goalie.

Jonathan Roy gave the middle-fingered salute - on both hands - to Chicoutimi Sagueneens fans on Saturday. "I acted in a way that is not acceptable for an athlete," Roy told a news conference in Quebec City.

They showed some of the video of the incident on the Calgary/Minn game yesterday. Very, very ugly...

It appears that Patrick Roy motioned to his son to skate down the ice and attack the other goalie, who wanted no part of the encounter as is evidenced by the video....The other issue coming out of the Roy situation is about the coach, Patrick Roy, who has been considered one of the finest coaches not currently employed by an NHL team... This incident lends credence to those who say hockey is a bullying, violent sport.

For the sake of his sport, Patrick Roy really needs to address this incident completely and publicly. An absolute must!

I have always liked Patrick Roy and thought it was the coolest thing ever when he paired up against Vernon, Osgood, and Hasek. The big difference here, is that those three goaltenders accepted the challenge by Patrick to scrap; Johnathon went after a goaltender who didn't appear the slightest bit interested in fighting or even defending himself. His actions should be sanctioned by the league in a severe way.

I totally agree.

Jonathan Roy's actions went beyond the level of game conduct and rose to the level of assault. I hope the league recognizes this and give him the largest suspension in it's history; maybe even kick him out. If not, the police and courts might have to deal with it... and that's when the sport gets not only tarnished, but ruined.

It doesn't make any difference if you have a hockey uniform on or even a police uniform. None of it gives you the right to assault others, especially people who are being passive.

7 game suspension for Johnathon, 5 for Patrick...

Wow...

The league is totally blowing it. That was an assault by Jonathon Roy, not a fight. They should have given him 7 games for flipping the double bird at the crowd to start with, and then go from there. That level of disrespect for the game by disrespecting the families and fans in attendance deserves 7 games by itself.

And Patrick's excuse? "I saw what Jonathan went through in the last few days and it was painful for him." That demonstrates he has even less respect for hockey than he does for his son.

He's a back up anyway he probably wont play again this season anyway so 7 games isn't bad.

Assault it is:

QUOTE
The son of hockey legend Patrick Roy has been charged with assault for his part in an infamous hockey brawl last season.

Saguenay, Que., police confirmed a single charge of assault was laid against Jonathan Roy this morning in Quebec court.

The younger Roy, a goaltender for the Quebec Remparts, is the only player or coach charged in the incident March 22 when he stormed across the ice to pound on the opposing goaltender, Bobby Nadeau.

Jonathan Roy and his father Patrick were suspended for the incident. “The investigation of this case is now closed,” said Saguenay public security spokesman Jean Boily, adding that no other charges are pending.

Jonathan Roy is scheduled to return to court Sept. 16... Link

And now they go to trial in October, after continuing efforts to have the case dismissed fail:

QUOTE
SAGUENAY, Que. -- The son of NHL hockey legend Patrick Roy will stand trial for assault next month after a judge rejected an effort to have the case dismissed Tuesday.

Jonathan Roy will stand trial for the on-ice beating he delivered in 2008 to an opposing goalie in Quebec's major junior league.

Roy -- a former goalie with the Quebec Remparts who now sings in a pop band -- had been trying to get the case tossed out. That motion was rejected Tuesday by Quebec court judge Valmont Beaulieu...

... Roy's lawyer argued that he was targeted by prosecutors just because of his famous family name -- the victim of a biased police investigation and improper application of prosecution guidelines...

I'd say that's probably the opposite of the truth. If anything, his family name would help him to skate on this.

I'm glad to see the Canadian authorities hold fast and crack down on this one. It is one of the most blatant examples of unnecessary, gratuitous fighting I've ever seen... and I'm a big proponent of keeping fighting in the game. This incident was definitely way over the line, and sets a bad example for kids, and the sport in general, if left unanswered.

Roy is just trying to play the politics of it.

It was a disgusting display, without a doubt. The other goaltender was just standing there. I'm glad they are willing to take it to court, because that kind of thing doesn't belong in hockey.
