TSN's Ice Chips:
Bobby Allen will likely have surgery to repair the disc damage that triggered the four separate episodes of back spasms, plus nerve pain that at times spread down his legs. From the first sign of trouble in October, to the playoffs, Allen worked hard to come back. "It's just tough when you're trying to battle through the season and you don't have enough time to rest," he said. - Boston Herald
GM Jim Rutherford says he hasn't made a decision on the future of coach Peter Laviolette. "Everything's the same as it's been." - Raleigh News Observer
The team didn't practice Sunday, and Head coach Joel Quenneville isn't certain if Peter Forsberg or Scott Hannan will be able to play Tuesday. Forsberg missed the first two games of the series because of a groin and/or ankle problem, and Hannan was scratched Saturday because of a lower body injury.
Red Wings forward Darren McCarty is convinced Forsberg will play. "I'm pretty sure, unless Forsberg's leg's going to fall off, he'll probably be in there for Game 3," McCarty said.
Quenneville strongly suggested that he isn't ready to start Peter Budaj when the series resumes Tuesday night at the Pepsi Center. "We'll talk about everything, but Jose's been our guy," Quenneville said. "Coming off what he went through is not easy. I thought 'Boods' did a real nice job in relief again, but Jose's the one who brought us here." - Rocky Mountain News
Self-doubt might again be roaming around in Jose Theodore's head. Judging from his inability to keep the Avalanche in Games 1 and 2 against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena - and being yanked in each - Theodore could again be wrestling with his demons. In Game 2 against the Red Wings on Saturday, Theodore allowed four goals, just as in Game 1, before being pulled in favor of backup Peter Budaj. In Game 1, Theodore suffered from flu-like symptoms. After the Avs' 5-1 shelling Saturday, Theodore said he felt fine - at least physically. "I was OK to go," he said after allowing four goals on 20 shots. - Denver Post
For Sergei Zubov, Sunday's game marked his first action in more than three months. He had not played since Jan. 17 and had sports hernia surgery in Munich less than four weeks ago. So he didn't carry anything close to his normal load. He didn't enter the game until the five-minute mark, and that was to take a short shift on a penalty kill. He finished with 16:19 of ice time.
Marty Turco has won three consecutive playoff games for the first time since the final three games of the Stars' first-round victory over Edmonton in 2003. - Dallas Morning News
The biggest obstacle facing the Red Wings as they go to Denver for the next two games could be the altitude. The Wings might have gotten a head start by spacing out playing time during Saturday's 5-1 victory. "That was one of the most positive things about (Saturday's) game is that our shift length was way down from the game before," coach Mike Babcock said. "We were able to keep the tempo higher, and that's what you're going to have to do when you go to Colorado. You're out of gas right away (because of the altitude). We are going to have to have four lines going." Hockey teams usually combat the altitude in a simple, yet effective way. "Short shifts," said Henrik Zetterberg, of the best way to combat the mile-high altitude. - Detroit News
Johan Franzen has been the early star against the Avs with five goals in two games, including the Wings' first playoff hat trick since Darren McCarty did it six years ago against the same Avs in the Western Conference finals. - Detroit Free Press
Former coach Doug MacLean is interested in returning to coach the Panthers, the same team he coached for four years. MacLean has said he will talk to GM Jacques Martin. - Plam Beach Post
Patrice Brisebois, who was a late scratch in Game 2 with a leg injury, will not travel with the team to Philadelphia on Sunday, but might join the team later. He remains in Montreal and will be getting more tests done on his injured leg on Monday.
The Habs held an optional skate Sunday with only 12 players taking to the ice, including the taxi squad. The only regulars who skated were Maxim Lapierre, Mathieu Dandenault and Ryan O'Byrne. - TSN
Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz has expectations that the team’s new ownership group headed by David Freeman will allow the team to once again pursue some high-powered talent to help win a Stanley Cup. - Nashville City Paper
Inserted into the lineup for the first time in the playoffs, Petr Prucha played 5:50 on the fourth line with Blair Betts and Fredrik Sjostrom, the latter struggled. Colton Orr and Ryan Hollweg were scratched up front in Game 2. The Rangers have not used the Hollweg-Betts-Orr line - a unit that Renney intermittently used as a checking line against Crosby during the last two seasons - since Feb. 23 in Buffalo. - New York Post
Mike Knuble held out hope that he'll return for Wednesday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Montreal Canadiens, but he seemed more certain he would be ready for Saturday's Game 5 in Montreal. Knuble suffered a partially torn hamstring in Game 5 of the first-round win over Washington. - Philadelphia Daily News
Just because the Flyers are immersed in the chase for the Stanley Cup doesn't mean that team officials aren't thinking about the future. When general manager Paul Holmgren was asked about unrestricted free agent Fabian Brunnstrom he replied with an emphatic, "Yes, we are very interested." - Delaware County Times
Sidney Crosby skated for 10-minutes prior to an optional team skate on Monday.
Gary Roberts, Georges Laraque, Jordan Staal, Jarkko Ruutu and Kris Letang participated as did the two goalies and all the scratched players.
Roberts did not play in Game 2 on Sunday and is still listed as day-to-day with a sore groin. He said he might have been healthy enough to play and will likely suit up for Game 3. - TSN
Crosby is determined not to let Rangers' superpest Sean Avery get under his skin with his antics and trash talking. "He's not going to change what I do," Crosby said.
Penguins coach Michel Therrien warned that if Avery targets Crosby, that the Rangers' stars would have to deal with similar tactics from the Penguins. - Bergen Record

Price getting lit-up. Two of the 3 Philly goals were softies. He's been awful these playoffs. Biron looking awesome...

Price is pulled, Halak starts the third period... wow.
Thanks for Huet, Bob Gainey! Caps fans everywhere rejoice.
Edit: Lesson - do not let one of your top defensemen take a major penalty against the top power play unit in the league.

What a game!!!! Is the lesson we take from Price going to be don't put it all on a rookie? Will he turn it around? Does his rookie status even play into the faltering or is it just a general run of the mill slump?

The Flyers crowd, which booed "O Canada," started chanting "U.S.A!" "U.S.A!"
Biron, a Canadian native, said the boos bothered him just as much as when the Montreal fans booed the "Star Spangled Banner."
"I don't like it, but you can't control 20,000 people," he said.
